If you get the right gear / mercs, lvl 4 missions can be "profitable" even without campaign modifiers to ease them (or making them harder). The 35 scientist bonus is worth it, especially in the longer campaigns, though, yes, you can live without them for the most part.
I've resolved my issues with the whole impossible missions complaint... I just had to spend more time replaying the missions I was failing. I wasn't used to the game or the pacing and I adapted to it eventually. I've beaten the long and short game, and I've been messing with the custom settings a bit. The game is definitely a keeper, very fun in bursts - if I start a campaign I feel compelled to finish it within a week or so. Its a very fun game.
