Left 4 Dead 2 won't start; need help debugging

Hi all.

Just purchased L4D2 and when I try to start it it says Starting Game and then... nothing. No error, no messages, just ... Steam, sittling there, mocking me.

Any suggestions on how to debug whether it is an application error or hardware configuration?

Hardware is a Dell Vostro 220, 4 GIG RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate. NVidia GeForce 210 with 1 GIG RAM. System is 64 bit installation. No hardware errors.
