Hard to say - these days with L4D maps all (as far as I know) being available in L4D2, it would seem initially that L4D has just become DLC for L4D2.

However, I would totally disagree. Without melee weapons, and a lot of the other gameplay elements the two games to me feel quite different.

L4D is more like chess, while L4D2 is more like Warhammer. While chess has less rules and is more simplified, you could never say that it is an inferior game.
