Left 4 dead 2.exe has stopped working

Okay so this has been really annoying for the past 2 weeks. I have tried EVERYTHING i could to fix this problem. I've verified the game cache, re installed the game, deleted certain files that it said that would work if i did, and everything else. I am getting really annoyed at this. I messaged steam support and i did what they said and it did not work. So since i cant play i decided to play portal 2 and found out that it gives me the same exact message when i try to play it. I have no idea if its just my source games cause TF2 and dota 2 work fine, but not lfd2 and portal 2. I don't know if installing any games affects it because i noticed after i installed Mount and blade: warband, lfd2 started giving me that message. I installed MAB two weeks ago and lfd2 was working perfectly fine up until that point. Please, someone help i really want to play lfd2 again.

I have a similar issue, only difference is that I had installed Windows 8.1 Preview along with beta drivers for the OS. Before I get told that I need to revert to 8.0, CS:GO worked on the system up until just this morning. I also took the time to delete all item from the 'Appcache" folder, and uninstalled AVG to make sure anti-virus software wasn't the issue.

Games that don't work:
Portal 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Counter Strike: Global Offense

Games that do work:
Team Fortress 2
Dota 2
Left 4 Dead (1)
Counter Strike: Source
Garry's Mod
Alient Swarm

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, after many changes without success. I decided to try something simple, such as setting steam to start up on administrator level access and it worked.

*sigh* Sometimes the solution to a problem is easier to fix than anticipated.

All source games work now, yay :\

May i ask how do you set it up to launch on administrator acsess?

To run as administrator go to your programs folder, find the steam.exe file, right click and select properties, then go to the compatability tab and select run this program as a administrator. Hope that helps.

Yes, i see but the privilege level box does not let me select the "run program as administrator" option. It is not highlighted like the other options.

And the listed games that work work, but the ones that dont work dont.

I take it you've ran both registry checkers and disk scan? If not do them both. These two things are, with the exception of viruses, the major problem causers people run into. I wonder if theres not a direct x installation or registry entry that the games that u said dont work have in common. As far as the scandisk, meaning possibly a sector where the common file is kept is currupt and needs to be marked as bad.

Also, just a shot in the dark, whens the last time u updated ur graphics drivers?

I have the same problem. Windows 7. All other Steam games (55) run fine. L4D 2 locks my computer up so tight, the only way I can even reboot is to cycle electrical power. It runs fine through the intro movie and then CRASH. Any help aprreciated.

So i should run a disk scan, or maybe defrag the games files?

And also i just updated my graphics driver a week ago, but that was after lfd2 stopped working.

Yes a scandisk w/ repair bad sectors checked. It will require you to restart your computer, a 500 gb hdd can take over an hour to scandisk, so do it sometime when ur going to leave to watch some tv or go somewhere, so you dont have to wait. As far as the other part, ccleaner has a nice registry scanner included in it. If you havent ran a registry scanner ever, i bet you have 100s of registry errors. My personal record is like 900 registry errors way back in my XP days.

Me too my left 4 dead 2 crashes like twice a day but not too often but i really dont bother it cause i can still play well :)

I am re-rebringing up a 4 year old post, because I face the same problem, only nothing works. I have tried a million thing and nothing works. verified cache, un and reinstalled the game, deleted all the addons and mods, turned off the cloud... ect. PLZ help me because I love this game, having played it for 2 years before with no problems up until recently. Another important detail is that it crashes mid-game and I play much more graphically taxing games perfectly fine.
