What's wrong?

I had that too a few times, just try another server. If it happens all the time then just delete that file and let Steam re download it.

I had this exact same steam.inf issue earlier today. The fix is very simple, just close all games, close Steam, make SURE Steam is properly closed by checking in task manager, then restart Steam and L4D2. The problem should now be solved (it was for me), but if not then verify the cache and repeat the above.

Do you have any custom stuff installed? turn it off in Extras/Extras. Then try again, if that doesn't work, there must be a problem with your game, or with steam, try verifying game cache.

then either your friends are part of the beta or valve is right on the verge of putting the update out and delivered certain files to some people by mistake. regardless, the problem will go away on it's own pretty soon. I know it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥, but there's nothing you can do at the moment.
