There already is. This is probably the easiest way to do it. Just make sure that you unplug and replug your controller in while the campaign is loading. This will trick your pc into thinking that the controller is plugged in as player 2. http://l4d2.gamebanana.com/guis/27354

it doesnt work all that well and it wont work online either, i still hope they add proper splitscreen like portal 2 devs did

it works fine for me. there is a way to use it online, i have done it before.

I've seen it work online before but I'm blanking on how to do it. It was convoluted though and you are right, they should just support it properly as a menu option.

To have it work online, the server needs to change the map using the ss_map command. This will load a splitscreen compatible map. I don't think you can use the addon I linked though. It's a little more complicated. Willing to help anyone who has any further questions.
