Necessity of headsets?
I just picked up L4D2 during the last steam sale, and was just curious how much people are expected to have headsets for communication in this? My old one died and I have yet to replace it.

I used to play this previously on the 360 version and it was kinda 50/50 on whether or not people were communicating.

I don't want to just jump in without one if the majority of players on Steam are expecting better communication from their teammates.

Communication helps but overall general awareness of your teamates / what's going on around them is far better. If you already have the awareness then mic communication can definitely enhance gameplay if you're playing competitively or need the communication for coordinating attacks in versus.

Actions speak louder than words. But I still use headset, its more convenient.

^ This. I have a playtime of 512 hours and more than 85% of the time, no one uses a mic. Except me (I play campaign mode, mind you). It's quite sad to see how few mic users there are in this game, especially since it relies so heavily on teamwork. It's faster to say "Smoker behind us!" or "Tank in the warehouse, wait for the others!" rather than typing it while the horde cuts down your health.

EDIT: Jeez, will you guys stop sending me friend requests just because I said that I use a mic? I never said that I want to form a group of mic-only people. And most guys on here play casually, not competitive, meaning we probably won't get well along with them when playing the game anyway.

If you can type fast enough and are pretty good with using the vocalizer menus, you should be fine, but voice communication is always useful. If you're stuck and need to say something quickly, typing can ruin you.

If you're going against a decent team you're going to need a headset because you need to be able to communicate infected attacks quickly and efficiently with your team.

On Normal difficulty and below: you don't need a mic. On Advanced and Expert: a mic is a necessity and I have no problem voting to kick people who don't have mics.
