Common Issues FAQ - Read this first!
FOR SILENT CRASHING WHEN YOU OPEN THE GAME
For some reason, the game will not give you an error properly when it crashes while launching if you launch from the Steam library UI, or any menu you get by right clicking a Steam icon. If you load the game directly from it's .exe in it's instalation folder, however, you should properly recieve one. It is almost impossible to begin helping without an error to start from.

If you have a question and asnwer you want added to the list, post it below and I will do so as soon as I can.

Index -

1/2/3) CPU errors - Often the cause of silent crashing at launch
4/5) GPU errors - Often the cause of crashes in-game
6) Input error - KB/M not working
7/8) General Issues - FPS and Save data

1) "My error says that the game can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing."

If you get this error it is because you are missing the correct C++ runtime that is required for the game to boot, or it was not installed correctly.

To fix this issue, first, make sure you have Service pack 1 https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/kb/976932 installed for Windows 7 systems, or update 2919355 https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/kb/2919355 installed for windows 8 systems.

Following that, install the redistributable from https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/kb/2999226 or inside the RE7 directory. If your game still does not boot, try fully removing the C++ redistributables from your programs, rebooting, and installing them again. You may also wish to remove the windows updates as well just in case, but make sure to reinstall them again before attempting to install the redistributable, or you will just get an error.

It is also of note that this game is made for 64 bit systems, so if yours is 32 bit, you may need to explore other solutions, which I am personally not currently aware of.

2) My error is similar to #1, but it tells me that MFplat.dll and/or MFreadweite.dll or missing!

You are probably using an "N" version of windows which doesn't come with a media player codec pre-installed, The error will crash you in the same way as the C++ issue, but will instead tell you that MFplat.dll and/or MFreadwrite.dll are missing.

A fix for this error was provided by capcom's own Wbacon, it is -

Originally posted by WBacon capcom:
If any of you are running Windows "N" edition that lacks Windows Media Player, the game will crash since it requires the WMP codec in order to play the WMV movie during the intro sequence.

To get around this issue, you will need to download and install the free Media Feafure Pack (which includes the media codec) from Microsoft below.

3) My game crashes after the opening video! - Fixed!

This is do to the game requiring SSE4.2 support for actual gameplay sections to function properly. At the moment there is no work around to fix this issue other than to upgrade your CPU to one that supports it. However, a patch is coming that should fix the issue - http://steamcommunity.com/app/418370/discussions/0/152392549354995616/ , so barring that, you will just need to be patient.

A patch has been released which should now fix this issue! Please make sure your game is updated fully and report back with any other issues!

4) My game boots, then immediately crashes with an error “d:\\reengine\\reengine\\builder\\modules\\render\\os\\renderdevice
dx11.cpp” 1661 Direct3D 11????? create failed."

The most simple solution to this issue is to update your video drivers. If that doesn't work, things get more complicated. Make sure that your video card supports Direct X 11(12?), as this game will not natively support anything less, currently. If you do not support it, there IS a work around, but it is very likely to not perform as fully intended, as the game is not intended to be played on older versions than DX11(12?).

go to your lower left corner and hit run on windows 7 so the command window comes up - type "dxcpl" now and hit enter.

If it opens proceed - otherwise
you can download manually first {LINK REMOVED}
just download and execute the .exe as ADMIN (!)

Click "Edit List" at the top and click the three dots to select the Game re7trial.exe should it be in the Installdir.

For example: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\Common\RESIDENT EVIL 7 biohazard Demo\re7trial.exe

after you have done that make sure at debug layer "Application Controlled" is selected and no Checkmarks are set beside "Info" at Mute Severity.

Now checkmark "Force WARP" at the bottom and click apply/OK

Now run the game via the .exe instead of Steam (it should run through steam after that anyway)

It Should start now if it works and use DX10 mode

5) My game boots, then immediately crashes with an error "d:\\reengine\\reengine\\builder\\modules\\render\\os\\renderdevicedx11.cpp" 4948 createComputeShader failed."

This one has come to my attention recently as well, while I was away another user looked into it and this is what they found -

Originally posted by Lady:
After some investigation I think I may have figured out our problem....The feature "createComputeShader" wasn't introduced to D3D until DX11.3 and is mainly used in DX12, it is part of ShaderModel 5.1...
While your graphics card MAY BE DirectX 11 compatible, it may NOT be DX11.3/SM5.1 compatible...therefore "createComputeShader" returns as not even being a valid function/argument and fails to load. Even if you ignore the error you will likely get stuck at a loading screen forever.

At the moment there is no real user end fix that I know of.

Another poster has this to say -

Originally posted by Likort:
I am quite sure that explanation is not true.

The game doesn't run on an AMD HD 6850 1GB.
The game does run on an AMD HD 6950 2GB.

So it's most likely the amount of VRAM that makes the difference, not the DX 11/12 support. Both cards are VLIW, not CGN, so they don't support DX12 and have afaik the same DX11 feature level support.

There is not solution on our side. On the developer's side, either the error message could be made more easier to understand, or they could try looking into e.g. fallback shaders, maybe also low-res textures, so the game can run 1GB Video cards, which is by the way at 33.56% in the Steam Hardware Survey, so it's the MOST common configuration available.

Which is unfortunately even more of an impossibility to fix on the user end. So hopefully the upcoming patch has something to adress the issue.

6) My Keyboard and Mouse won't work! - Fixed?

The first step is to unplug all devices from your computer aside from the keyboard, mouse, and any display or sound devices, especially any controllers, USB, Bluetooth, or otherwise, then boot your game.

This occurs because the game is set to lock on to any device it considers as a controller, and use that as it's exclusive input device. Meaning that your keyboard and mouse won't work to control the game if you have/it thinks you have a controller currently connected to your system.

If you are absolutely sure you have no device that should be considered a controller attached to your system, follow these steps:

Open your start menu, and type in the search box "Device Manager"

Open the Device manager

Look on the list for the entry that says "human interface devices", click the arrow beside it

Find the entry that says "HID-compliant game controller", right click it, and click "disable"

Try to load your game, if it still doesn't work, and you have an Xinput controller, you can also try the above steps, but under the "Microsoft common controller for windows class" title.

Remember to re-enable these devices after you are done playing if you want to continue using controllers for any other games on your system.

After applying the new patch (12/27) and finally being able to try the game on my PC, I gave a shot to both controller and KB/M. WITHOUT unplugging my controller. Both input methods seemed to work, although not at the same time. (IE: Using the keyboard to move, and the control stick for the camera, don't ask, I was just curious)

7) Why is my FPS so low!

To answer this question, first we have to look at your hardware, does it meet the minimum requirements? If so, first start by lowering shadow quality, and turning off the shadow cache, they will likely be your two biggest sources of increased FPS. The next step is to reduce your screen resolution, and/or internal resolution setting, from there, turn down effects volume, texture quality, etc. till you hit your target.

One option that has come to my attention as a big, big no no, is HBAO+. Apparently, the way RE7 currently handles the HBAO+ is such that even the strongest computers around take a humongous performance hit. If you have a high end rig and aren't hitting your target, the first thing to check would be that this isn't turned on.

8) Where is my save data!

Intel(R) Core(TM)i7-2600k 3.40GHz 3.39
8,00 GB
64 Bits
GeForce GTX 650 Version 80.7.35.0.52

As I'm going to buy a game that the demo is already giving error, without technical support or response from the manufacturer?

MFplat.dll and/or MFreadweite.dll error
I intalled everything, and end up doing what I did for Metal Gear solid Ground zeroes, just get the dll and copy in the exe file folder (that worked for MGSV, but not for RE7)
Whn I do that I get this other error:

The procedure entry point MFCreateMFByteSteamOnStream could not be located in the dynamic link libraty [R7Path]

well canceling the idea of pre order this or buying until this problem is solved.. is a shame :(

I keep getting this error.

d:\\reengine\\reengine\\builder\\modules\\render\\os\\renderdevice dx11.cpp" 3465 mapresource. HRESULT=0x887a0005, The GPU device instance has been suspended. Use GetDeviceRemovedReason to determine the appropriate action.

This happens around 10-15 of playing the game, other than that the game runs smooth as silk, just the error over and over again.

I've have all the latest drivers (I've even reinstalled them) and tried running it on all graphics settings very low, low, med, high, very high.

My specs are i7 4790k 16ram GTX 780ti I know it's not the latest gear but it should run this surely, right ?

Hello, I get to view the intro, I see my hands and stand up, after about 10 seconds or so, game freezes and error dialog box shows up, I still have sound (I hear BG noise and music while the dialog box is displayed), and the error reads like this:

“d:\\reengine\\reengine\\builder\\modules\\render\\os\\renderdevicedx11.cpp” 3770 present failed. HRESULT=0x887a0005, The GPU device instance has been suspended. Use GetDeviceRemovedReason to determine the appropriate action.

I have dx11
Windows 8.1 64 bit
Intel Core i5-4460 3.2 GHz quadcore
8.192 GB internal RAM
0 Video RAM (unfortunately)
Any ideas?

My Hardware:

GTX 970 Nvidia
Core I5 3570 3.4 GHz

is every one that gets 4948 createComputerShader failed error running windows 7??
As far as i can tell the game is making a call for dx11.3 features but they arent suppotyed in windows 7.. 7 is a max of 11.1
8.1 is 11.2 i think (not sure if those work or not)
and you need 10 for 11.3...
