Is Lumberjack Bugged?
Out of curiosity I followed a lumberjack and saw that although he had reached his production limit he spends a LOT of time idling in his woodcutting area with no task listed.

Do Lumberjacks NOT become general laborers when they hit their production limit?

Do only certain professions release their laborers back into the general labor pool when their specialty work is "caught up?"

If this IS their intended behaviour it makes the game a LOT more fiddley than it needs to be.

Nobody becomes a general labourer when the work is done. :steamfacepalm:
..except builders. Farmers and Gatherers will do carry/collection tasks when they can't work due to weather. Just about everyone else sits idle if they have no work I believe.
i don't think this is the case, but i do know the school is 100% like this.
Actually other workers do carry/collect if they cannot do their assigned job. Except for Hunters, foresters, healers because a healer needs to be on call. I think I missed one but I have even had the teacher do some fetch and collect, some.
ah, good to hear. i'll have to take a closer look next time I run out of wood to chop.
Yeah they will idle. Same with farmers when there's snow time. It forces the player to stay look over their village, i often dont know if my firewood reach its limit since theres no warning or reminder (the icon hovering above the facility do, but when the village is getting bigger its hard to notice)

As far as i know Builder DO General Laborer's job if theres no assigment, and they do collecting the resources by themself if the resources isn't enough for the build.

Let me know if the last one is wrong ;)
I've been watching this more closely and it FEELS like a bug. Tailors and Carpenters and even farmers will ALL pitch in and haul (or even harvest & haul) resources when they've hit their own production limits. It's just lumberjacks so far that don't seem to help out.

If there's a game-play reason for this, could someone explain?

I'm using 1.0.6247

teachers too
I have had my teacher go collect resources but they do need to be avaiilable to teach students. Lumberjacks also perform an essential job because if firewood is not available villagers could freeze. Charcoal is made from firewood so needs a supply.

Yes, it could be a bug or oversight so report it to the devs and let them decide.

Interesting that no one has reported that when in FP mode you cannot interact with the furnace.

Side Note: My villagers are rebellious socialists who some free time. Some fun time. All work and no play make villagers grumpy. Or IMO at least should.

Recently spotted a farmer just standing in his field in the dead of winter. Followed him for a bit. Seems there's a bug in that he does this a lot. Other farmers are out gathering resources.
The other frarmers may have gotten all of the resources. If someone is mining a stone that is too large to carry in trip other laborers will not help.

Here's another example of the bug. This time with a Clay-Miner http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=950556956

And another with an Orchard keeper
