The Kharaa Frigate Troop Carrier ship is roughly twice the size of the Star Wars LucreHulk Starship.
The Kharaa Galaxy Hive ship is about five times the size of the star Sol.
And the Kharaa Transgalactic Homeworld ship is about four times the size of the Sol star system.
The Kharaa gather entire stars inside the hive and homeworld ships to use as their energy source to move their ships. Instead of warping space, folding space or slipping into hyperspace, the Kharaa use an Oolian drive. The Oolian drive involves positioning a star into a propulsion chamber and then inducing the star to go super nova. The massive explosion is shaped thru varying sized chambers creating a shockwave that moves the ship at nearly light speed.
Kharaa ships do not use energy force shielding but rather incredibly thick hull construction. Anything that comes into contact with the hull while the ship is traveling is pulverized by its sheer mass and density.
The Kharaa built their ships using gathered materials from their original galaxy Khartraan and several other galaxies along their way to ours. They use a combination of infestation growth and gathered materials to form and complete their ships. Set inside the homeworld ship is the Kharaa solar system and home planet.
Stopping the Kharaa is imperative before they colonize and ransack our galaxy!

and thats how a round in natural selection 2 starts
I agree with you that a round starts that way and the Marines do need to get rid of the Infestation. I don't imagine the Infestation Bacteria just magically appear and live in the power nodes though.
In my mind I imagine that it takes a group of Gorge Engineers with a contingent of Skulks to initially seed and spread the Infestation Growth Bacteria. In order for this to happen the Kharaa Frigate Carrier ship launches an Assault Hive Seed ship, carrying Gorge Engineers and Skulks, which physically pierces and penetrates into enemy ships, stations, buildings, etc. The Gorge Engineers and Skulks disembark and setup the first Assault Hive at the nearest energy source by delivering Infestation Growth Bacteria and then the round begins.
We don't actually see any part of the Assault Hive Seed ship in current maps firstly because the game developers did not concieve of this premise and create it, and secondly broken, flaming smoking holes in the bulkheads are enough to show the initial entry points of the Kharaa Assault team.
Thanks and see you out there,
