Downloading the Unity Pre-Alpha Demo
So, in light of the news, I thought of sharing this so at least you can enjoy the Unity demo in the meantime in Steam.

1. Go to SteamDB page for the demo[steamdb.info] and click on Free.

This will add the demo to your library and download a txt saying that it is no longer available.

2. For the next part you need to open the Steam console tab.

To do this, just write steam://open/console on your favorite browser (except Chrome, which doesn't seem to run it) or via Windows command ( reference guide here )

3. With the console opened, we need to tell Steam what to download using the following command and syntax:

download_depot <appid> <depotid> <manifestid>

We can find this information in the SteamDB page of the game:
  • AppId: 487390
  • DepotId: For Windows it should be 487391
  • ManifestId: Clicking on the 487391 depot we find five manifests, which are detailed below.
Manifests:
  • 7847623918450651507 -> dated June 28, 2016, it is the original demo.
  • 9020427759353814225 -> dated July 7, 2016, it is the updated demo,
    patch notes here.
  • 98012910271389663 -> dated August 24, 2016, a small update to fix crashes (details).
  • 2474838272846005525 -> dated August 21, 2017, replaces the demo with a txt saying it is no longer available.
  • 3622916228797244153 -> dated August 21, 2017, replaces the txt with a slighty different one (changes the word demo to proof-of-concept).

So to download the final updated demo, we should write:

download_depot 487390 487391 98012910271389663

(if you want, for some reason, to download any of the previous versions, just change the manifest id number)

The console will read: Downloading depot 487391 (410 MB) ...

Now you need to to wait for the download to finish. There won't be any progress indicators, but you can check your Downloads page to see that there is something downloading as indicated by the current network usage.

4. When the download is finished, a similar message to the following will appear in the console page :

Depot download complete : "YOUR DRIVE\\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_487390\depot_487391" (123 files, manifest 98012910271389663)

5. Now you need to go to that folder, and copy all its contents to the one created in step 1, which should be something like:

YourDrive\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\System Shock Demo

6. Now you can ran the demo.

I just checked in My Games and it is still there to download, need to login first into Gog.

No longer listed out of it.

Yeah, "just download the gog version" really helps if you don't have it in your library...

Yeah, didn't know that it wasn't there anymore. Let's try this (guess it will requiere you to login in GOG, so if you aren't, try the following link after doing it):

https://www.gog.com/downloads/system_shock_demo/en1installer1

If it works, let us know.

There is a backup of the updated patched steam demo available for download at systemshock.org, and I think there is still a link for some version at Humble store.
