First, laptops with hybrid video; the lower performance chip will not run Heroes VI. The easy fix is opening NVIDIA Control Panel, going to Manage 3D, on the Global tab manually select High-Performance NVIDIA and try your game. If it still doesn’t work, go to the manufacturer of your laptops support site, download the newest NVIDIA and lower performance chipset, usually intel, and then go to the NVIDIA website and download the newest driver for your chipset. Go into Control Panel, Programs and Features (or Add remove Programs on an older OS), and uninstall both NVIDIA and Intel graphics. Reinstall the Intel from the manufacturer’s website, install the NVIDIA from the Manufacturers site and reboot. Now use the installer from the NVIDIA site and allow it to unpack, but cancel it without actually installing. Go to Computer (or My Computer), right click, select properties, and go into Device Manager. Find the Video and expand it, select the NVIDIA, right click and select Update Driver. Now you want to Select the driver manually and browse to the NVIDIA folder where the driver unpacked (usually C:/NVIDIA), select the new driver and it will install the latest core without updating and breaking the software for the Hybrid Video. Go back and repeat the first steps of this paragraph by setting NVIDIA control panel to use the High-Performance NVIDIA. Do NOT update from Windows Update again these two drivers!!!!

Second is the UPLAY problem. I am sorry, but this only works in about 90% of the cases and I am sorry if you hit one of the 10% that it does not work for! Close out STEAM completely, go into your steam folder and select the Steam exe, right click, select properties, set it to run as Administrator, restart Steam, and try Heroes VI. If you are one of the 10%, remove all local content after going to Admin with Steam, reinstall Heroes VI, ignore the warning about Compatibility Mode, and play. Out of this last 10% this also works about 90% of the time leaving a grand total of only 1% that still cannot start UPLAY.

Freezing and Black screen are the easiest to fix, but is also the biggest pain as it must be done each time! With Steam running as Administrator, start the game. As soon as it loads, hit CTRL/ALT/Delete and select start task manager, on the task manger, on the lower left, hit the button that says Show All Processes. My first question would be your system specs; especially video card, video memory, pc memory, and cpu. This is not a problem I have and I will play 4-6 hours at a time on gigantic maps building my weapons experience. It is probably halfway to the error of black screen or freezing video if ti is lagging. It could also be data transfer from the hard drive though it is more likely a memory issue. My hard drive is an OCZ DataPlex so i do not have hard drive data issues and not only do I have 16 GB Ram, I dropped in a 150GB Raptor and dedicated it to page file with my C: Page left set to system managed. It is not unusual after hours of play for my page file to be holding 20-30 GB for Heroes VI because it has so many memory leaks and triggers a svchost.exe to climb to use the rest at up to 100GB in virtual memory. The only thing I know for sure is it is video related and after playing more than four hours I have to reboot my PC though it will let me play as long as I want as it is only when I quit that it wont let go of the virtual memory.

I am running on a dell alienware and I assure you it is not a spec problem, I ran H6 wide open for 12 hours straight at times . I think I have 800 hours of game play on steam and never had a problem untill SOD.I also noticed that I dont have to restart to fix simply load a game from the turn before (after a miserable loss) and that also cleans up the game, anyway thanks for the ideas you have posted hazardhawk I am sure this will help many!!
