When playing single player being online just slows the game's running speed down a bit.
That's the one (and only) design decision i didn't like in Heroes VI - the rest were all improvements imo. The being able to recruit from any town and town portals speeded the game up massively and took out some of the parts that were just boring (endless tours of cities recruiting). The character trees are far better than the other Heroes games imo because there was far more difference between different character classes' and factions' skills.
