I've tried the demo off and on for over a year hoping that a patch will come down eventually for the poor performance of this game on "high-end" video cards.

Quite a laughable issue for a video game to have... however it is a crippling one. Modern rigs don't work with this game - or at the very least mine doesn't. I have tried to adjust my maximum RAM however that does absolutely nothing - and changing a global rule specifically for a single application is a piss-poor solution.

None of the user mods / patches are compatible with steam, and I do not want to buy the game unless through Amazon and have another physical game box and disc.

.... why is this even listed on Steam if it doesn't work on a modern PC - or at least, a modern gaming PC?

It used to not work for me, but now it works fine. I did not adjust my RAM and I have 4GB. I just downloaded clean and it works.

Thank you for at least replying. I will try a re-install again, see if that helps the demo. If it doesn't help the demo to work than I will just act like this game never existed I guess - or at least that is essentially what Steam told me to do.

Well,somehow the GoG.Com had no rpoblems working on my windows 7 64bit ssystem.
But I'm running an AMD graphic chip,no Nvidia (This seems to be important, as Nvidia drivers do not work well with HoAE).

Thank you for letting me know that they had an issue with Nvidia. My rig has been updated since this post, so I may try again with my new AMD.

I have found that the Demo of the game is much, much worse on the bugs and random problems front. After I bought the normal version it ran smooth as silk. Still had to deal with the "missing Steam.dll" bug but that was a really easy fix.
