all the Dead Space series are linear ( come on your trying to escape not sight see.), but Dead Space 2 does give you more room to explore and search for hidden items, same for DS3 I think but I haven't truely played it yet (only the demo). Scarewise 1 and 2 are the same for me a little tension and some jump scares. The Fear 2 demo scared me more so try that and see if it catches your fancy. I haven't played Resident Evil so I can't make any comparisions. Dead Space 2 I enjoyed and I recommend playing it even if it's not up to your level scarewise.

The first is arguably the most scary, as the later 2 are more action focused imo. I'm currently really enjoying the 3rd game though but it does love to use the "hoard" mechanic of enemy spawning instead of "boo" type scares. The most tense moments are when you are backed into a corner and have to reload and are out of health packs with 3 or more enemies closing within melee range... Doesn't happen often enough though to be truly scary.
