There are some unpleasant puzzles in the game, but those are not cryptic logic puzzles and you can easily use a walkthrough if you get stuck. Or you can even use it for the whole game, it will not spoil much.
Is the story anything special? Yes, it definately is.
Is the game in realtime 3D? I believe its not.
Yes, it is prerendered, but I can't remember the resolution, though it's not a really nice one. But you get used to it.
Are there other characters? Yes, there are. I think the voicework is pretty decent.
How does suspenseful horror work together with slow paces adventure mechanics? I do not really get that question, but it basically is exploring and doing ''puzzles'' in a big manor. (Not only a manor, you will find out) with scary parts in it. Most of these scary parts occur during the night, because the time progresses if you progress in the game.
I would say give this game a try. From what you say in the beginning, I think you will like it.
One of the things I liked the most about the story wasn't the plot itself, but the writing and the way it left you progressively more curious. So if that appeals to you as well, this is definitely an interesting experience.
Also, in the same style, consider checking out Dark Fall and Barrow Hill.
