Do I need to know the story?

I'm interested in picking up this game, but since this is a fourth installment, is there any story I need to be aware of? I refuse to play DMC3, because it's a terrible port by the looks of it. DMC4 however looks interesting.

most people claim dmc 3 is stil the best ^_^ but id say no ya dont need to know the other storys and besides the games aint made in chronical order thought it was someting like dmc 3 dmc 2 dmc 4 dmc 1 but i cant be sure

Yes, DmC has literally nothing to do with the the other games. It's an alternate universe prequel.

You don't really need to know the story to understand everything, although you do miss out on things if you haven't played DMC1 and 3. You do unlock the "History of DMC" which basically recaps the story of the previous games (including DMC2 which isn't canon anymore)

As for the story, well it might be worth playing the others first. DMC3 is actually set before 1 and 2, and 4 is last, so it goes like this:

You can buy DMC4 without knowing any of the story. A started with 4, then 3 and last one I got reboot DmC. I never played 2 or 1. 4 has different story and doesnt go around Dante much.

Oh I don't know what this port meant, my bad. You can still play it on PS2 though, since this port is only with Steam I assume?

You don't need to play dmc 3 to understand the story of dmc 4. So I advice picking this game up

Terrible PORT,meaning they made the PC version half-assed compared to the console ones

Keep in mind, there are mods for the PC version of DMC3. One of them is a Widescreen fix, which is amazingly awesome and I think there are a few more useful ones. Widescreen was all I needed though.

As for getting DMC3...Well, get DMC3. Even on PC it's an amazing game.

As said in other comments, a simple read-up on the stories of the previous games will get you caught up, though I suggest experiencing them if possible. (I know DMC3 is available on Steam, 2 is optional and doesn't really have an important story) As far as DmC, don't bother. It's not canon to the original series, and has a lot of terrible content in the story that is just unnecessary vulgarity.... very much a turn-off if you ask me. If you ARE looking for a good newer release that can hold up as an action title worthy of the previous DMC games, check out Metal Gear Rising. It's pretty much what DmC should have been in a lot of aspects-despite carrying a completely different story.
