For what it's worth, I also run into the same issues (and attempted all of the above) when trying to launch Trails FC and SC.
My specs:
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 450 @ 2.40GHz
Graphics: GeForce 310M
RAM: 4GB
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Thanks in advance!
Whenever I was using streaming in steam it would not load (steamlink).
The game worked just fine when it was disabled.
The issue was borderless windowed mode. As soon as I set it to fullscreen the issue was fixed. For some reason it only occured for me when using streaming.
Give it a try to see if it works, especially if you have a steamlink always on or something.
Boss: _____ The Savage (I forget the full name) in the Sealed Area (Chapter 2 - presumably late chapter 2)
Party: Ries, Kevin, Joshua, Julia, in that order.
On the first turns, I got to work casting Ascencion on the small mobs. The game crashed on the boss's first turn, which strikes me as a little too unlikely to be a purely random crash that isn't related to the boss itself.
As people have no doubt gotten past it (unless they're just hacking in the achievements - which I highly doubt since I know there's some very loyal fans who've been waiting longer than me for this game, and have doubtlessly played more than me) it clearly doesn't happen every time, hence why I included info about the party and actions taken, just in case it was a specific combination resulting in an overflow or something.
EDIT: Forgot to include the system specs:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
Video Card: Onboard Graphics only, sadly. Something like 1600mb.
Proccessor: Intel i3
RAM: 4 GB
Still, this helps narrow down a culprit, so it was worth making the effort!

If you need something else, just tell me.
Yes, did both of those, turning off the directSound completely one time and turning only the BGM off another time.
