The gameplay reminds me of civil war generals from the 90s. Is it comparable?

I'm new to Civil War strategy, can anyone give me some advice? 1. From a defensive point of view, is it better to be unformed in woods or in line formation in the open? 2. From an attacking point of view, is it better to attack unformed troops in woods or line troops in the open? Any other strategy tips gratefully received....

I can't beat The Hill as the Union in historical mode. I can't see how it can be done. Maybe it's just lack of generalship on my part, but I wanted to check that it is possible to win every fight!

Is there a hotseat mode? The store page only mentions single player, so I imagine there isn't, but just in case, I figured I'd ask.
