How do I go down ladders?

Doing what the game instructs you to do does nothing. I tried about 10 times doing different variations but I always fall down a few feet and die. I'm talking about the ladder that does down like a watchtower that you can get to within less than a minute of sprinting to the leftish after leaving the first ladder you climb out of.
