(Linux) Multiple crashes & bugs
I bough this right when it came out for linux but just started getting into it now. So far I've had multiple crashes back to the desktop and now in Venice I cannot get any further in the game due to a bug. I've only attempted once to go further.

After going to the brothel in Venice and sneaking through the storage area with alot of enemy soldiers you get into the room where the cutscene shows the enemy taking you hostage then you pull a knife on him and get the upper hand. During this cutscene the last lines to be spoken cannot be heard on the speakers and you just keep holding the knife to him and no matter what I did could not do anything. I just kept holding a knife to him.

There errors in my kern.log for this game are as follows:
kernel: [34926.480112] MetroLL[5738]: segfault at 0 ip 0000000008f877db sp 00000000c1efda10 error 4 in MetroLL[8048000+1336000]

Im running Ubuntu 12.04, latest updates, GTX 480 with driver 331.20, Intel 990x with 12GB ram, and playing with a Logitech cordless rumblepad 2. Playing on a 52" Plasma panasonic TV through HDMI at 1920x1080.

I have the same issue.

I've been experiencing crashes in Metro Last Light quite frequently, I purchased the game through steam so that is what I'm currently using for a launcher and have not tried to launch the binaries from the terminal.

My system info:

Fedora 18 Linux localhost.localdomain 3.11.9-100.fc18.x86_64 #1 SMP
Intel Core i7 4950K 3.4ghz
16GB of ram
Nvidia GTX 770 (2x SLI) Linux NVIDIA proprietary driver version 331.20-3
Steam API version v012

Steam STOUT (before and after segfault):

OnFocusWindowChanged to unknown window type: k_EWindowTypeNonSteamDesktop, 0
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(gameoverlayui)/version(20131202145833_client)
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(gameoverlayui)/version(1.0_client)
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(gameoverlayui)/version(1.0_client)
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/69-gnu-free-serif.conf", line 24: unknown element "langset"
[1203/185846:WARNING:proxy_service.cc(958)] PAC support disabled because there is no system implementation
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(gameoverlayui)/version(1.0_client)
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1386029254_client)
Game removed: AppID 43160 "Metro: Last Light", ProcID 2475
Focused window is now 1, 0

Metro Last Light segfault indication (provided by dmesg):

[] warning: process `MetroLL' used the deprecated sysctl system call with 10.1.
[] MetroLL[2498]: segfault at 1 ip 0000000008dd401f sp 00000000c19f7b30 error 4 in MetroLL[8048000+1336000]

I enabled the "AFR" SLI configuration option in the X configuration since I'm in a SLI configuration and it seems to have allowed me to play a bit longer, but I'm still experiencing seg faults ... mostly during certain parts of the game.

This is the only game I can recall paying full price and I waited for the Linux version. But because it crashes so often I have been playing it on my mac with intel hd4000 graphics with the quality slider on the lowest setting, needless to say, I cant even tell whats what sometimes, especially outside. I get about 15fps outside and its all blurry. Even still I love the game, really wish the devs would sort this linux issue out. When the SteamOS is released a lot of people are going to pick up this game and be very dissapointed that they cant even play it.

I've notified the Metro Last Light technical support about the issue, so far they have been pretty unhelpful blaming my Linux distribution. I've provided stack traces and segfault information to them to try and help them debug the issue, so hopefully we can at some point get a patch to correct the issue. I haven't tried to perform any Nvidia driver related fixes yet, as I've read in other forums that version 325.x is apparently working for some people. I may try that tonight and see if I can get any further. I'm running a SLI setup, not sure if anyone else here is, since I've enabled the above mentioned SLI configuration in the X settings, I've been able to consistently play for a good hour or more without it segfaulting.

I run this game in SLI as well and it doesn't seem to make a difference in performance or crashes. I can rarely play for longer than 30 minutes without a segfault. Many times the game will crash on the opening sequence, before the game menu appears.

In SLI SFR mode if I change the volume with my headset the bottom half of the screen will not update while the Ubuntu volume indicator is visible.

In its current state this game is almost unplayable for me, but I keep playing anyway. In the part when your outside trying to find fuel, the game must have segfaulted at least 30 times before I beat the level. I sure hope the developers take notice and release a patch.

On Fedora 19 I had maybe 2-3 crashes until I reached the marshes. In the marshes, the game crashes very frequently. Playing with the lowest quality seems to have helped.

I have a single card (GeForce GTX 560 Ti 448 Cores).
I would downgrade Nvidia driver. 319 workes best for me.

This is really taking ages to fix, it still Crashes. I am on Debian Unstable with Nvidia Drivers 331.49-1 packaged by Debian. Bought the game on Steam and it is unplayable as it crashes always in the outside scene when the pack of wolves run. It crashed a few times before this level in inside scenes but now its always crashing cannot further.

I read the book and really looked forward to playing this game. Hope somebody still looks for a fix. Maybe a link to the game makers responces would be nice in the thread if one of you has it?

+1 Lets hear from the devs and get this game playable on Linux. I read the book because of this game and would like to play more but its not enjoyable because of constant crashes to the desktop every 5-10 minutes. AFAIK there are no AAA titles on Linux, there would be 1 if this game was actually playable.

Yeah I'm not holding my breathe. If Valve were serious about the Steambox this would be a priority.

what does metro have to do with valve?

Very little, and quite a bit at the same time.
This is an AAA tilte. There aren't that many on linux. It's very bad PR if this game doesn't run right.

Right now, it CERTAINLY doesn't run right.

Seeing as so damn many different distros have problems, that seems cheap. Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu are already mentioned here, personally I have the same issue on Sabayon. Obviously it's not distros, it's the game.

Metro Last Light is inexplicably crashng my whole system after running for about 1 minute (still stuck in first level elevator scene) I am extremely agitated about buying a game that crashes my system and runs at barely 22 fps on an AMD r9 270 when most OpenGL games run at 300+fps at MAX settings. Also WTF is with the linux version of video settings, it's just a slider....no resolution, vsync, AA, Filtering, motion blur....?

Also, The game is using 100% of ALL SIX OF MY CORES!! is that normal?
