Won't start on Win 7 with gamepad?

I have Windows 7 on a 64bit PC. When I tried plugging in my USB gamepad (Logitech Wingman Rumblepad) during the control setup screen, Bard's Tale totally locked up and I had to kill it from the task manager. When I tried to start the game with the gamepad plugged in, it would show up as a background task and use up my CPU, but otherwise there was no sign of it. If I unplug the gamepad, though, the game starts as normal! Any idea what's wrong here? Has anyone gotten this to work?

What driver are you using? Can you set your controller to emulate a 360 controller? I use offline-MotionJoy with my PS3 controller and have it set to emulate a 360 controller, which works well on Win7 64bit. There are options for other controller types, so you might be able to do the same thing with your Logitech.
