Gratuitous Space Battles

Gratuitous Space Battles

....done
This game started out cool, but it's just utter bull now.

Offensive: 40 squadrons of fighters -not 40 fighters... 40 SQUADRONS of fighters, in the campaign map, and I couldn't kill 8 frigates, I lost the battle, all 8 frigates still remaining.

Meanwhile I get attacked by SIX squadrons of fighters against a tank cruiser with 77 armor, 2 melee cruisers with tractor beams and fast-track weapons, 4 escort frigates with anti-fighter missiles and lasers, and 4 missile cruisers with fast missiles and a defense laser...and I get shredded.

Utter. Freaking. Crap

You ONLY had fighters?
My experience in the campaign has -or was- that fighters were all that were effective. As stated above. I had fleets of frigates with (supposed) anti-fighter weapons and cruiserss with up to 77 armor and they'd get taken apart by fleets with 6 squadrons of fighters.

So yeah. I started running only fighters on any map that didn't have radiation to stop them.

....and I lost 640 of them to 10 frigates withotu so much as scratching one of the frigates.

So as I said. It's crap.
*sigh*

1: That's a dark-side tactic, no one likes that, use cruisers.

2: They likely had a high armor rating that would only allow you to damage them with lucky shots, making fighters baity and ineffectual.

Again, use cruisers.
I use cruisers.
I use cruisers with an armor rating of almost EIGHTY (80) and they get killed by fighters.
I use cruisers with tractor beams and "anti-fighter" weapons, and frigates with "anti-fighter" weapons, and they get killed by fighters.
So...how can I use cruisers...or anythign but fighters (or...anything...since...apparently my fighters can't kill crap)?
80 Isn't enough for fighter weapons I think.

Questions, how many "Lucky Shots" have you got or had inflicted on you?
80 is the max armor I can get!
70 is running a ruiser with 1 engine, 1 generator, 1 crew compartment, 1 weapon and NOTHING ELSE BUT ARMOR!

And I get a TON of lucky shots against me (next to none when I use fighters, which is why I said above, "are they just overpowered for the AI and sukkish for players?")
That's just bad luck, I rarely get Lucky Shots against my cruisers.
When luck counts more than strategy in a strategy game, then the strategy game is broken.
No "lucky shot" by a fighter's laser should penetrate, damage, or even freaking SCRATCH a cruiser's armor -let alone a cruiser with the HIGHEST armor possible.
That's a game mechanic in place to prevent someone with tons of armor (Entire fleets of ships of NOTHING but armor, generators and a few weapons along with crew compartments have destroyed my large fleets of cruisers) to simply win by default.

Luck does not count more then strategy., Armor is damaged by any weapon with a higher armor penetration then their average armor, Lucky Shots penetrate armor with weapons will less armor penetration.

This is definitely a game with hard counters. You could be cruising along with a super powerful fleet and then you hit a fleet that will wipe you out. I usually have two offensive fleets, one mostly fighters and frigates, the other mostly cruisers and frigates. My fighter fleet went up against a balanced fleet and overwhelmed most of the ships except for four cruisers that I couldn't kill. I had to keep returning with new fleet compositions to try and crack those four cruisers.

Think of it as part of the fun...trying to figure out the puzzle and how to defeat the latest enemy fleet. Those frigates, what race were they (one raice has a nasty aoe AA gun), what weapons did they have, were your fighters only one type (beam or missile), or a combination? Did you have painter fighters? The great thing about fighter fleets is you can feel safe experimenting because you can retreat quickly.

Lucky blow isn't luck, it's really like (someone else chime in here) 2% chance of bypassing armor. Which is why so many folks get lazy and create giant fleets of beam fighters. But what fun is one-trick fleets?
It's actually a 2% chance to damage armor,
If you having probelms with fighters killing frigates - in the load up and orders window set he weapona ttack distance to 30 or 40m to hit under the frigates shields otherwise its a constant miss - why you get eaten alive :P
I always set my attack distances to minimum for fighters.
They just did 0 damage to the frigates through their armor (no idea how, their fighters chewed through my cruisers with 70+ armor) with no lucky shots

Best idea would be to stop using fighters exclusively and use cruisers and such.
Which brings us back to the problem of my cruisers and frigates get chewed apart by their fighters without dealing any damage to them despite being outfitted with anti-fighter weapons and having anti-fighter escort frigates.
