[SOLVED] Split screen low fps
Hi there.
I have one serious problem. Terrible perfomance in splitscreen (two player). Can't even get 30 fps on lowest settings.
Phenom2 x6 + HD6850, 4Gb DDR3, win7pro x64, catalyst 12.11. Obviously this PC runs ss3 easily, but... not in splitscreen somewhy. Any fixes or directions where to look from lovely community?

im using a nividia geforce 620 and i get that issue too. all graphics set to low and it still has low frame rate. the xbox 360 version oddly does not have low frame rate (the card in a xbox 360 is mid range). and yes the card can run the game with awsome graphics it is just split screen i turn the graphics down on (and it does not work).

P.S. to let you guys know i tried the demo version on split screen(xbox 360 version) and it was fine. also i will say the geforce 620 can run the game with great graphics it is just the splitscreen that causes the issue. pc version needed some optimization or at least a quick heads up the splitscreen needed the console command put in before you play

yeap, that's funny thing - xbox 360 has 8 years old hardware and somehow perfoms better than my pc at lowest. Thought that's an issue with my setup, but seen some talks that on nvidia hardware it runs bad too. I can run borderlands 3 times windowed all max and play it with friends. Sadly split-screen was point of purchase SS3 (full priced), as I want to support this cause. And numerous patches (and drivers) away - still can't play it with my girlfriend :( Can't find any solution for this.

You need to manually adjust performance options for split screen. We didn't do automatic detection for split screen on PC as there is a lot of different configurations so it would be hard to do correctly.

Xbox works differently. It has everything simplified a lot even in single-player and even more in split screen. Just compare screenshots. ;)

So... Phenom II X6 and HD6850 is not enough to get stable 30 fps in split screen on lowest setting? That's one heluva optimization! PC gaming at it's best.
Yeap, I tried to set every possible option in custom configuration to it's lowest, lowered resolution to 720p. Still at level 'Under iron cloud' game perfoms around 15-20 fps. While being totally unplayable not only because low fps but because blurry visuals too.
Actually SS3 on lowest settings looks even worse than xbox 360 version. I'd prefer working game with crappy visuals to unplayable game with crappy visuals. And it just don't work in split screen no matter what. Maybe SS3 just don't like my hardware config, maybe something is wrong with AMD HD6850 cards, I don't know. But I still think that any PC which meet system requirements mentioned on store page should be all good to play any mode on lowest. Tried different AMD Catalyst versions, reinstalled windows. Still no luck. The funny thing that my work PC perform a lot worse in singleplayer but almost the same in splitscreen. And it is dual core intel with some old crappy geforce 9600gt.
Singleplayer works like a charm. Who needs singleplayer anyway? Boring. I have friends, Serious Sam is for serious friends.

It shouldn't be as slow as you say. First thing to try would be to execute this in the console when you get into the level:

gfxResetRenderingDevice()

If that doesn't help, please post the Sam3.log file from one such session, so we can examine it. Thanks!

Getting 15-20 fps no matter ultra or lowest gfx/cpu options are set to. That slow.

Here you go. I hope you'll find something useful to find out what's wrong on my side:

upd: Tried OpenGL renderer, and it works slightly better.

Hi,
I have a Phenom 955BE@3,7 GHZ (4 cores), 8GB Ram, HD 7870
I've bought the graphic card only for Serious Sam as we want to play the game in 4 PLAYER SPLITSCREEN mode. As the survival maps run with 18-50 frames (depending on the maps), the campaign mode runs really slow. Frames are between 17-25 frames, even on low settings @1080p. There is almost no difference between low and high settings, the performance is the same. Any advices how to improve the performance? Is the CPU the bottleneck?
Thank you

Well, 4-player split screen in campaign is really very demanding on the GPU. You mention you tried the Low settings. But have you tried Lowest? The main difference is dynamic shadows. With that enabled, the GPU has to render approximately 2x more batches, as it needs to first generate shadows (which takes between 1-3x as much as rendering the main scene), and then render the scene.

Hi, I've tried all options and checked the performance result of each option. In the end NOTHING gave me a single frame, I was on middle and on ultra settings on 18fps. But also with low and high cpu settings. Only minimum graphic settings resulted in 33fps. And in the end it was only ONE setting: Dynamic lightning (German: Dynamische Beleuchtung). Everything is now on high-ultra but this option is deactivated. 25-40fps instead of 17-25!
Strange: GPU was only stressed to 50% according to GPU-Z on all settings.

Thank you for your comment. Hopefully this helps others.

Good to hear that. Thanks for feedback!

Haven't played SS3 for about half a year. Yesterday tried it again in Coop (2 PCs - Internet).
Min FPS were always on 35 and max 120-160 (without VSync). And no Setting in Performance Options could Change the Min FPS :squirtooh:

I'll try it with the Dynamic Lightning off. But the game ran better half year before. Can't explain it.
Have the 7950 AMD Boost and it's max on 40-50% load the whole time. Something is wrong with the drivers or the last updates :(

I've played SS3 again with 3 player splitscreen. In some areas I again get only ~17fps, although GPU is on medium Dynamic Lightning is off. May an old driver be worth a try (which one?)? I'll play again with all settings...but I still expect a better performance with a 7870 and a Phenom 2 955@ 4x3,7GHZ. Ideas are welcome.
