Risen

Do this step before installing Risen
Remove the TAGES install files otherwise steam will still install it on your computer. Risen no longer needs TAGES.

Only from the redist directory?
Or bin directory, too?

Risen doesn't use it in any form anymore. Steam just hasn't change the install script or removed the files, you can safely remove both or if you're brave enough edit the install script and remove the two TAGES references.

Excuse my question. Do you mean that we should remove these files before first launch of the game? Because downloading and installing -imo- is the same on steam... please explain if otherwise.
Tealus Oct 9, 2012 @ 1:13pm
What Steam calls "install" is just downloading the files. Steam does not launch Risen's install script until the first run. So if you don't want TAGES installed on your computer, remove the files before running Risen otherwise Steam will run the TAGES installer.

Thanks to your thread I did so. tyvm. I removed the files from the redist and the bin folder -.-

Oh sweet mercy, thank God they finally removed that crap from the actual game (clearly I'm late to this party). I've literally had this game sitting in my list for almost 2 years not willing to subject myself to the TAGES BS, after having bought it on sale without first checking to make sure it wasn't infested.

PS, thanks for the tip.

Out of Curiosity, what is TAGES? I guess I should consider myself lucky I don't know what it is.

It's an extreme DRM that is known to cause hardware failures if it thinks you're a pirate. Which is also known to have false positives, many many times.

They have try to run away from this bad reputation by renaming their product SolidShield. But it's the same thing.

Alright, I'll admit I'm somewhat of a noob at this.
How do you find that file? I can't even find Risen!
sePL80 Oct 11, 2012 @ 1:38pm
go to your steam folder. usually:
steam/SteamApps/Common/Risen/
there you will find the "Redist" and "bin" directories. In each of them are 2 Files named TARGESsomething. Just delete them.

Awesome! Thanks....but my copy still isn't working :(
It stops running every time I try to play it
LAME

Does your pc meet the system requirements? Maybe it will also help to run the Riven.exe as administrator and in compatibility mode....
Also try running it without using steam (through the Risen.exe directly)
I hope this will work for you. The game is beautiful.
ps Also check your windows display settings, eventually your pc thinks that you have 2 monitors connected and tries to display the game on your non-existent display.

Some people might need to set compatibility with Risen.exe (which you'll find in the bin folder).

Try Disabling visual themes and desktop composition, maybe even setting it XP SP3.
