It is called a reference.
If it was a connection it would mean it is actually part of portal in some way (I.E Black Mesa has a connection with Aperture science as they are both set in the same universe and are rival companies)

black mesa was attacked by aliens but they take more direct approaches, and aperture (owned by cave johnson who LIES to people) has GLaDOS malfunctioning and cave turned blood into gasoline, and put in really REALLY deadly test chambers but atleast it has a cool portal gun
and black mesa gave people hazard suits to protect them from hazardous enviroments and they did PROPER science
