If you like my mod, feel free to post a thank you message in the thread! Feel free to thank me personally too if you wish. ;)

I hope you all enjoy my hard work.

V1.2 update. please download to fix issues. May take time to upload file, if link is broken please wait 5 minutes before trying again.

<<DOWNLOAD HERE>>[drive.google.com]

Changelog

v1.3
-had to change the name and everything...

v1.2
-fixed ob.ogg (bombing mission music) loop data.

v1.1
-added wind.ogg to fix some background music in spots.

Installation

Simply replace everything in [Steaminstalldir]/Steamapps/common/Final Fantasy VII/data/music_ogg with these files instead. You may backup the folder instead if you want.

Known issues

-Barret.ogg sometimes plays out of key due to a fault in the OGG codec. When the song is played again or looped though is sounds fine. [CONFIRMED]

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this mod ruin steam achievements and cloud saving?

Absolutely not. All this does is replace the ogg files, it never touches the .exe, which is whaty controls cloud saving and achievements in the first place!

What is this:

This is a set of 94 ogg files that contain nearly flawless recordings of the original PS1 music. They have been meticulously edited to loop perfectly in game.

Why did you make this

I made this because I was not satisfied with either the recorded MIDI ogg files SquareEnix provided us, or the Remastered music files that FFT made. This was my first time playing the game and I wanted a authentic experience.

How did you make this:

I used Adobe Audition for cutting the music up
Audacity for encoding the music into newer version of OGG format and adding proper metadata.

How long did this take you?

This took me a good 20ish hours total time to do. Because I've worked with music games such as In The Groove[en.wikipedia.org] for editing music ogg files, this was a fairly simple job.

How big is this?

I exported most of the ogg files at quality 8, as the difference between 8 and 10 will not be heard. [s]The file size is actually quite small, coming in at around 180mb. [/s]

The file size is now 280mb

I counted the files and there is some that are here that weren't here before, and some that are missing!

Interesting note on this, some files are never actually used. The Intro of the FF7, the music is actually encoded into the movie file. oa.ogg is never used. wind.ogg was added into the pack because the game actually uses wind.wav in FF7/music/ for background noise and wind.ogg in FF7/music_ogg/ for actual background music. Square Enix missed that one... So technically I fixed a bug for them.

Hey! One of the songs is missing/messed up/doesn't loop properly/freezes the game!

No problem, just post it in this thread and I'll release a new version eventually.

To Do

+Make a automatic installer program so computer illiterates don't need to stumble through steam program files.

Wonderful!!! That's so much for this. You're a star.

This thread is much more fun than the stupid petition thread. Nice work.

I cannot for the life of me find any trace of comical.ogg. And I have to go my stupid job now. Someone friend me so they can send me the MIDI/FFT version of the file. I'll catch you all later (around 6 hours from this post!)

Listening to these now - I made a copy of the music folder before doing so - and this is GREAT. The slight differences in the music on PC always bothered me, and they take away from the nostalgia. Thanks for doing this, OP.

Now to put these in the right folder...

These are the ogg files that the game doesn't actually use at all.

The music is SO much better now!!!

One problem, though: The music stopped playing partway through the boss battle in the reactor (right at the beginning). And then all music stopped playing after that. Very odd.

Huh. I thought I fixed that. It didn't have the correct LOOPSTART sample number to loop from. I must've accidentally overwritten my changes. Will fix and release a new version post haste!

I'm loving what you did so far but there seems to be a LOT of little things that can stop the music from playing and it doesn't pick back up until you enter a new area where the music changes. These things included entering or exiting battles and activating an attack that takes a longer animation like a limit break or summoning,

I'm honestly not sure what is causing this problem as it doesn't seem to at all have to do with the file hitting the end of a loop, it's most definitely when activating certain events.

I'm content to use it as is until the problems is figured out. Losing music once in a while is still better then having crap sound in the first place.
Not sure if this has been covered, but does this version affect achievements and cloud saving?

No. This doesn't affect ANYTHING. It just replaces the music files with new music files. That's it.

Hmm. Assimi, comparing the metadata in your versions with the old .ogg files reveals some differences. Does it matter that there's no LoopEnd?

Also there's a LOCATION field that simply has the filename in it.

Difficult to see why that would make a difference, but you never know...

Woohoo! :P

Its possible the game allocates only a certain amount of memory for its sound. I had this issue before when modding other video game music.
