UFO: Extraterrestrials Gold

UFO: Extraterrestrials Gold

Worth buying?
I've been a fan of the XCOM series since I was a little kid. I've played the original trylogy, the UFO spiritual succesor, and recently the latest XCOM:EU. I've had Extraterrestrials on my want list for some time, waiting for a price drop or sale, but due to the not suprising dissapointment in the Firaxis/2K game (c'mon - who thought that a mainstream game could even scratch the coplexity and freedom of the originals?) I'm wondering will this game fill the gap and wash away the bad taste left by EU?

So is it worth having in one's collection?

I too am curious. Any thoughts anyone? I know the metacritic reviews aren't the best, but I've seen some pretty enthusiastic comments after applying some mods
Of all the clones of the OG xcom I would say this one is the closest to the original. If it wasn't for the laser pistol clip exploit. Also you are not defending earth.

The Gold-Version has the mods included and plays pretty well. I feel it's a really solid and tough clone. Oh and Interceptor Fights are better in this game then in any other Ufo-Game I've seen so far.

What I find really stupid is the setting. I don't get why they didn't let it play on earth. This other planet really hurts the atmosphere a big deal.

One thing I really like about this one compared to the new X-Com: You can Aim wherever you want!
I'd say it's well worth it, if classic X-Com's your thing, but you'd like it to look rather less dated.

Ignore the metacritic score, it's simply wrong as it's based on the non-Gold (therefore non-patched and unmodded) edition. ET Gold includes many a patch and mod that cleans up the fairly dodgy release version. It's a lot more like the classics of olde than the XCom EU reboot is imo.

Only potentially big downside is like Ail and Klas say; it's not set on Earth.

There is a mod to play on Earth actually.

Is this compatible with the Gold-Version that has integrated a lot of modding stuff? Because it sounds like there's a lot of overlapping.

Edit: The Mod-Page says it is. So installing it now. Thanks for the hint! :)

Trying to install that mod heavily backfired...
Steps 1-3 seemed to somewhat worked. For step 4 it said that it cannot find a specific file.
When I then wanted to try it out, steam complained that it has to something with the game aswell and obviously partly reinstalled it.
When I then started it, all my previously made settings to the BMan Mod as well as my savegame were gone.
Planet was still Esperanza, not Earth.

I agree, this game is closer to the original xcom than the new xcom that just came out. Not that I don't like the new one.. I do have 88 hours invested in it.

You need activate the earth option in preferences and you can see the features of the mod in that link.

Cheers.

As I said, I couldn't even install the mod properly. (maybe because of the steam-version?)

No the Gold Version is definitely not worth buying it crashes at random points. I have played it for under 8 hours and its crashed a lot for me to the point where it is really getting frustrating trying to get anywhere in the game. Dont buy it. UFO ET 2 is being developed but based on the lack of support for this game I wouldnt recommend that one either.

I've played the Gold-Version well over 50 hours and never seen it crash. oO
I just have the mod installed on the steam version. Did you follow the steps from the installation section?.

When the installers ask about select the directory select something like this:

X:\Steam\SteamApps\common\UFO Extraterrestrials Gold (X letter of HD).

Cheers.

As I said, I went through the steps and at step 4, which is one of the patches, I got an error message and that had propably caused the other errors.
Since my saves are gone anyways, I might do a clean reinstall and try it again.
Sad to heard that. Maybe if you can specify the error i could try to figure it.
