Crash on Startup

Replace your Settings File
Try swapping out your settings file so the game starts in a lower resolution in windowed mode.
You can download a settings file configured for this by right clicking the link below and clicking "Save Linked Content As...", and saving it to this location:

Windows:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Hacknet

OSX:
~home/Library/Application Support/Hacknet

Linux:
~home/Hacknet
or
~home/.config/Hacknet

Settings File Here![hacknet-os.com]

Replace any Settings.txt file that's already there if one exits.

Run with Web Disabled
Some hardware setups don't play well with Hacknet's web renderer. You can disable web rendering with a launch option from within Steam.

Right click Hacknet's name in your library list, click Properties, "Set Launch Options..." and add the launch option:

-disableweb

Run in XNA Mode (Windows Only)
Hacknet also comes with the option to run the game from the XNA framework, which will work on some graphics card that the base game doesn't boot with (older Nvidia cards especially). XNA Hacknet requires a different set of files, so you'll need to activate the XNA Branch on steam.

Right click Hacknet's name in your library list, click Properties and go to the Betas tab.
Enter the beta password hacknetxnabranch and click Check Code. It should add the Hacknet XNA Branch to the drop down list above - select it.

After downloading the XNA build files, you should be good to go. It it doesn't run, with an XNA error, navigate to this file:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Hacknet\_CommonRedist\XNA\4.0\xnafx40_redist.msi

and run it. The repair option should do the trick.

Run in Compatibility mode (Windows Only)
Find the Hacknet executable in the following folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Hacknet\Hacknet.exe

Right click it, select properties. Go the the "Compatibility" tab and check "Run in 640x480 Resolution".

Check "Run this program as an Administrator"

Start Hacknet and change your resolution up again via options menu.

Everything Running Extremely Slowly

If on windows, use XNA Mode
Follow the instructions above to activate the XNA branch of Hacknet and run the game with that.

Disable Multisampling
Turning off multisampling in the settings menu can greatly improve performance, especially on integrated and laptop graphics cards.

Cant Complete V's EnTech Missions
If you abandoned V's missions before completing the chain, you can get back to it by completing or abandoning whatever mission you're currently on, disconnecting, then reconnecting to CSEC and looking there.
Further Information Here if that doesn't work.

What Next
If none of that helps, post in the bug report thread with any details you can. Screenshots of the window/issue, and especially of the console are hugeley helpful. Look in the following folder for crash reports and please send them along with your report to give me as much information as possible:

My Documents/My Games/Hacknet/Reports

If it's a save file specific bug, please also send your save file, located here:

My Documents/My Games/Hacknet/Accounts

Thanks, and good luck.

HI Matt,

I just started the game, and it's difficult to play. I'm unable to see my cursor and don't think the game is supposed to work with keyboard navigaiton. I have no save files and I don't know if a screen shot will work. Running Win10 on a Samsung i7 notebook.

That's a problem - you're absoluteley meant to be able to see the mouse. I suspect that in very rare cases, some computers may be having trouble rendering the mouse.

Once I get back I can work out a solution for you (which will probably be custom mouse support in the settings, that you'll have to enable), but not till I get back - a bit over a week. Thanks for your patience!

Run in XNA Mode (Windows Only) did the trick for me. Running Win 10, Intel HD3000 series. This may help others to...

Not sure what this is considered, so I decided to just ask directly. I have a problem where it starts, but it's just a black screen, and the Steam overlay pop-up in the bottom corner starts glitching out, where it's just popping up repeatedly and won't stop. Not sure how else to describe the issues I'm having, so I'm sorry if this is really vague.

By the way this is on a Windows 7 laptop

Try the first workaround posted, the one about substituting the Settings.txt file. I had the same bug, and it worked for me

Ok, so I have a very unusual crash so please be patient with me. Whenever I run the game, I get the black screen with a white box in the center. Then my computer shows the Bios and starts booting up like it shut down. Looking under event viewer, it says that the power was shut off unexpectedly, but no other errors. this bug ONLY happens with Hacknet, and all other steam games are unaffected. When I ran the game from the .exe in the Steam folder as admin, The game just crashes without restarting my computer. I am on Windows 8.1. There is no log generated, but the command prompt that launches with the game has this as an output...

Steam Init Failed! First Init Failed. Second init Running = False OpenGL Device: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4400 OpenGL Driver: 4.2.0 - Build 10.18.10.3574 OpenGL Vendor: Intel MojoShader Profile: glsl120 Using EXT_swap_control_tear VSync! Any Idea? Thanks!

I'm having the same issue (running Windows 10 on a non-touchscreen laptop) and the suggested fix cannot be applied because I get a 404 error on my browser trying to access the download link.
