not sure if this will still be of any use to you (seeing as it's been over a year and a half), but I just solved a similar problem for my own instance by, well, not launching from the .exe. I was only launching it from there because I thought I was in the same boat as you (that is, I thought there was no other way to launch. The game didn't show in my library after the demo). However, I then realized that it might simply be hidden, and tried searching my library from the search bar on the top left of the Library tab, and sure enough, it was there and allowed me to install the game properly, alleviating the problem. If you're still interested in solving this, could you try that and post whether it works (and if not, what went wrong)?

Note that this is assuming the executable is still installed and configured to avoid the incompatibilities that cause the "fatal error" issue a lot of people, myself included, have been reporting. If it's not installed, you might just need to install it and if you get that error, try following the instructions in this post. They fixed the "fatal error" and "steam.dll" error for me. Apparently it's just such an old game that it needs Windows XP compatibility and someone to move the DLL it needs. Go figure!

I followed all the linked instructions, launched from Steam and it still doesn't save. (That's the demo; but I'm hardly going to buy the full game with that bug.)

No, but it claims to. Every time you do something, it asks whether you want to save your game to Steam cloud.
