Aside from a love story, that's rather blah (gotta have love scenes in war movies so chicks will watch it with their significant other) its got a lot of very cool action scenes. Unfortunately the only copy I could find has subtitles that aren't translated well at times, but overall worth a watch.
and later in the end they 'tragically' die in a snow strom.
if that's the case it's a bit NTY.
or is it something else?
No, that's the 1993 German movie you described.
You might want to watch the whole movie, pretty good imo all things considered.
You guys might want to also check out Cross of Iron, another good film with an anti-war slant since it was made just right after the Vietnam conflict.
Fun in an utterly depressing way, but yep watch it as well.
Thats because much of Fallen Fighters is based on an actual part of the Stalingrad battlefield; known as the Univermag Department Store. It was serving as the German commanders' command post by the end of the battle. The development team used old maps, building blueprints, and aerial recon photos to recreate the battlefield.
