Is there a way to unlock more factions?

Outside of the Peninsular campaign, is there a way I can play as other countries such as Spain? I went into the custom battles and it gives you several more nations to play as, so it only makes sense if theres a way to use these same units for a grand campaign. I defeated Spain in the grand campaign but it doesnt seem to be like medieval 2 where you unlock the countries you defeat. Am I missing something?

No, it only includes Europe

I have used NTF several times; each time I could play two or three times, then the game would not open and I would have to delete and reload. I finally gave up on it.
