Have you tried playing from Windows 8 desktop mode instead of the Alien/steam UI? give that a try , once you make your graphic changes you might be able to play from the Alien UI , Please let me know how it goes , I have a Alienware alpha too and want to get this game if it works :)

Can I just say... props to you guys for buying that thing. Are you console players trying to get into PC games or PC players trying to have that "couch/controller" experience? Just curious. :D

Same issue here with the Alpha. Any time a graphics change is applied the game crashes.

Many thanks senyac! Your suggestion is exactly what fixed things for me. Here's exactly what I did:

1. Connected a mouse to my Alpha and went to Desktop mode.

2. Launched Steam via the Windows desktop. Ran Oceanhorn from Steam. Went into the graphics options and changed them to Ultra. Hit apply. Success! No crash :-)

3. Shut down the Alpha from the Windows start icon. Turned the system back on. Launched Steam from the Alpha UI. Launched Oceanhorn and verified settings.

Now I'm running the game at 1080p with Ultra settings. Game looks and plays fantastic so far. Thanks again :-)

glad it worked , i will have to get the game myself now :) This shows the problem is NOT a Alienware problem BUT a Steam Big picture mode problem .The Alienware UI uses steam big picture mode for launching steam games and it seams to cause these types of problems with a few games , Left 4 Dead for example can only be played in windows desktop mode :(

Rammstein ,
personally I am just a serous gamer :) I have been a PC gamer for over 30 years , I used to make my own PC gaming machines but I also have consoles , PS3 , PS4 . PSvita , PSTV , i7 PC with 16gb ram and nvidia 2gb card ect and now the i7 Alienware Alpha , and the Alienware Alpha can run ALL my steam games on 1080 at highest settings at 60fps or better :) its a good machine for hooking up to a big TV :) Watch dogs , Shadow of Mordor ect all run at max settings :) I dont understand all this BS about consoles vs Pcs and now Alienware vs consoles vs PCs lol why dose it matter ? as long as you can play the games and enjoy them :) besides having PCs and consoles gives you the best of both worlds , there are games that are NOT released on PC you know . like alot of JRPGs for example .thats where PS3 ect win the race , thats if you like JRPGs (which I do)

I agree that the issue likely involves Steam Big Picture mode. I suppose it could be something with the Alpha UI software running in the background in "Console" mode as well. A good test would be to run Steam in Big Picture mode while in the Alpha's "Desktop" mode and see if the problem persists. Maybe I'll do that test later tonight when I get the chance. I'd be interested to see what results others get performing that same test as well.

Something else I've noticed in regards to Oceanhorn's settings... you can actually use the Low/Medium/High/Ultra presets from within the Alpha without having to boot into Desktop mode. You simply go into the settings and pick which preset you want. Instead of applying changes (which will crash the game), exit out of the settings (B button on the Xbox 360 controller) and then the game itself (bottom left corner of the options screen). Upon re-launching the game, the in-game settings will be changed to the preset you selected :-)

The caveat is that none of the individual settings can be changed this way. For example, flipping the VSync option from on to off and following the instructions above will not save the setting upon exiting the game. That is, when you relaunch Oceanhorn, Vsync will still be turned on. Hitting the Apply button will crash the game of course :-)

One other thing, and I don't think this is an Alpha specific issue. During my hour long play through this morning, I noticed that the game would intermittently drop off into 30fps territory when run at 1080p on Ultra settings. I've seen this issue reported elsewhere with different hardware configurations. Dropping the graphics preset down to High seems to resolve the issue with the game maintaining a frame rate at or near 60.

For reference, I started out with the i3 model Alpha, but have since upgraded it to an i7 4765T CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a Toshiba 256GB SSD.

Hey guys,

That's great you've been able to get this resolved for the most part. There may be some kinks to work out on the Alpha, but it sounds like you're on your way for now.

neildittmar, you mentioned that you were experiencing issues with a drop in fps. There have been a few other reports of this issue from players and there will be an automatic update out soon. In the meantime, you can try lowering the resolution you use to play the game (especially if you have been using resolutions higher than Full HD, e.g. 2k or 4k) and switching off Clouds (i.e. cloud shadows on the ground), smooth shadows, and/or dynamic ambient occlusion. Also, try different settings for reflection quality (i.e. reflections drawn onto water).

If you run into any other issues, keep the posts coming!

Hey Trevor :-)

Very cool that someone from the dev team dropped into this thread. Thanks for the news on the update. My current workaround is to lower the graphics settings from Ultra to High. For reference, I'm running at 1080p resolution. Still looks great! Maybe I'll try dropping some of the individual settings that you noted, but my fix works well for me now. Enjoying the game. Can't wait for the update.

Also, we've speculated in this thread that the crash problem when applying graphics settings on the Alpha may be because of Steam's "Big Picture" mode being used. Can Cornfox give this a go on their test machines and report back their findings? It would be nice to either confirm or eliminate "Big Picture" mode as a factor.

Thanks!

Hey neildittmar,

It does seem like Big Picture is a little more intensive so you may be onto something. We can look into this for sure. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you're interested, there's a bit more discussion about lag and fps going on here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/339200/discussions/0/610575007221241323/

Take care,

Thanks Trevor :-)

I had a chance to do a little more experimentation with my Alpha and Oceanhorn. Turns out that if I run the Alpha in Desktop mode, but switch Steam to Big Picture Mode I do not get the crash when changing graphics options. That's to say, the problem isn't specific to Steam's Big Picture Mode in and of itself.

It's only in Console mode that Oceanhorn crashes when graphics settings are applied. If I had to take an educated guess, I'd imagine it has something to do with the Alpha UI software, the "Alienware User" Windows profile it auto-logins with, or one of the other Console mode subcomponents.

Something else I noticed in regards to the Alpha and Oceanhorn. I was originally running the GPU drivers that auto-updated on the Alpha. For reference, these were version 344.75. I updated them to the latest 347.52 Forceware drivers and performance seems to have increased for Oceanhorn noticeably when run with the Ultra graphics preset selected. The in-game performance still gets shaky at times, but it is nowhere near as variable as it was.

The catch is that these newer drivers are considered "beta" by Dell/Alienware, despite them essentially being the NVidia Forceware 347.52 WHQL driver set. Therefore, they will not update automatically and have to be manually installed in Desktop mode on the Alpha. The thread on the AlienwareArena site detailing the new drivers, along with a link to the driver set, can be found here:

http://na.alienwarearena.com/forums/thread/89012/hardware-software/alienware-alpha-beta-driver-347-52

Additionally, folks may want to take a look at the feedback in that thread as there are some additional caveats that one should be aware of before installing these drivers. Generally speaking though, I've found that they work great on the Alpha for Oceanhorn or otherwise!
