Deus Ex: Mankind Divided™

View Stats:
Max FOV is too low, is 90-100° in 16:9, need 120.
Hi! I prepurchased this because 1) there would be a FOV slider and 2) DX:HR's FOV could be adjusted by Windows Registry editing, and since the same devs would be delivering this experience, I assumed that we'd somehow make this work. And maybe we will - the game has been out for less than an hour (on PC). I'll give up hope (-> refund) only once the 14 days are almost over.

Problem:

The "FOVCorrection" Registry value at

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Eidos Montreal\Deus Ex: MD\Graphics

does nothing, at least increasing it does not increase the FOV.

I don't know why developers are *still* unable to understand that the correct FOV is merely a function of effective screen size (Actual screen size and viewing distance.) and is *not* some kind of universal "100 is enough" kinda thing. How come that I, who is not a professional game developer, know this, but the people who *need to know*, the ones who have the power to decide over what we'll experience, very obviously *do not know* this?

:(

And - in this thread: There will of course be at least one person telling us that "You don't need a FOV higher than X.", because it is for some reason some people's hobby to fight against *other people* having options. Maybe because they don't have a big UHD screen right in front of them on the desktop, or maybe because they really don't understand. Who knows.

***PLEASE GIVE US HIGHER FOV OPTIONS! We do need them.***

-----------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: A Cheat Engine script was posted that allows to adjust the FOV freely (meaning outside the slider range). (PCGW has been edited accordingly.) It works with Steam DXMD.exe version "1.1.524.10" and probably later versions, too (possibly also earlier versions). If it doesn't work for you, check the version on the "Details" page of the Windows properties of the exe.

Here's the link again: http://forum.cheatengine.org/download.php?id=118807

Here's how I used it:

* Start DX:MD and load into the game.

* Switch to Windows and double-click the script file on your computer. This starts Cheat Engine (if you have installed the program :P) and loads the script.

* Click on the button at the left top which is glowing gloriously. In the list, choose "DXMD.exe". CE will ask you if you want to keep the current list/code - click YES.

* In the list at the bottom, mark the checkbox next to the entry saying "FOV", which will make an additional entry visible.

* Now return to the game, look around for a moment, then return to CE.

* The additional list entry now shows a number, e.g. "1.25". Mark the checkbox and double-click the entry to change the number. When you return to the game, you will see the changed FOV.

------------------------------------------------------------

Alternatively, use a hex editor (like HxD) on DXMD.exe v1.1.524.10, search for the bytes

E0 2E 65 42 35 FA 8E 3C 00 00 00 00 00 00 80 39 00 00 00 3F 00 00 00 40 DB 0F 49 40 40

and replace the first four with "00 00 8C 42" or, for even higher FOV, with "00 00 A0 42". This causes extreme visual problems in take-down animations and in some in-engine cutscenes. Rather use the Cheat Engine script.

♥♥♥♥, so the old workaround in the reg doesn't work like it did for the previous deus ex 2011?

1. Start > type regedit > Enter
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Eidos\Deus Ex: HR
3. Look for the value called g_fov
4. Go to this website: http://home.paulschou.net/tools/xlate/
5. Type in the FoV value you want in the ASCII DEC / CHAR box and hit < DECODE >.
6. Copy the value under HEX, and replace the first line of g_fov with that value. For example, an FoV of 123 is 7B. Leave the rest of the numbers at 00.
7. ???
8. Profit!
No, does't work. The xlate website doesn't exist any longer, but the hex values at play here are different, anyway, they have three digits.

My first attempt was to just increase the hex value. Loading the game just gave me the widest FOV that the slider can set. Because of your comment, I just tried to set a very low hex value, and loading the game just gave me the most narrow FOV that the slider can set.

So, they have some kind of data "sanitization" going on there that DX:HR didn't have. That's technically good (from a developer perspective), but we're currently screwed. CRAP why can't developers understand the SIMPLE facts of FOV!

looks like we'll need a cheat engine script.

That is a golden idea. Assuming that the in-memory value is the same as the one written to the Registry, we could step through the slider via keyboard to effect a few different but reliably reproducable positions, write down the Registry values (possibly having to quit each time, not sure), and then start hunting for the values (blindly, aka without checking Registry) with Cheat Engine.

I just hope the devs will wake up and realize that this PC port has still a few problems that need fixing. I'd rather not start hunting for the value, because even though I did almost nothing in the game, I'm already at 30 minutes, and I don't wanna lose the ability to refund. (Also, it's late. See ya!)

OMFG IT WORKS! :D

How did you identify the address? In roughly the way I described, or is there a trick I should know about?

Also: We need to put this on PCGamingWiki.

What I plan to do right now: Edit FOV section of PCGW article, linking to the Google Drive address, while naming the actual creator of the script in the edit-description.

Are you ok with that, and can you get me the name of the guy, and is he ok with that, too?

Also, if DX upgrades - which it sure will - the script might break. It would be good if we'd have a way to recreate this.

Sure thats okay

Actually - the "correct" as in, most realistic FOV for 16:9 is around 90 horizontal. So about 59 or so vertical. 120? Nah, you're a quake pro, sir.

I'm not sure that the FOV slider represents true FOV. I say this because if you reduce it to zero FOV (which should mean you see nothing) it's actually somewhere between 30 and 40 FOV.

That is very interesting. Not true at all. But interesting.

THESE guys are trolls. ignore them

I am just curious why FOV is such a big deal? Is it because of a multi-monitor setup where you have monitors on the sides? Just curious

It's actually true - and it's the standard as well. You simply have a different preference.
Monsieur Hitman_Actual, I made the edit and also made a post on Reddit so that this spreads faster. THANK you and your friend for giving this to us. And ... get ready to change it when Eidos inevitably throws a few version upgrades at us.
