Can't get the xbox 360 controller to be first player?

Whenever I try to play the game, the xbox 360 controller defaults to second player, and I can't figure out how to change it. Can anybody help me with this?

Hm, that's odd. Maybe try to plug in the controller in a different usb port and then start the game? And maybe also disconnect other usb devices.
