This tricks works with most of the game I had troubles with.
Well, if you did not find a way yet, here's how I procede. Not complicated, and worth a try since you don't need much to do, nor any game breaking changes:
I right-click on the game's name on the left column, and choose properties. Then, I click on the button that shows the local folders, and start the game with the application icons directly from there. And bam, here we go.
Though, some games "explicitely" want you to start the game from the steam interface, let's hope this ain't the case for this one. s:
