Be prepared for some very hard work trying to learn this "game".

Its not so much of a learning curve, more like a sheer cliff face.

I do think there is a good war simulator here, if you can get yir head round it.

Oh and dont dare pointout that the "game" is anything but the best thing ever,
or the fanboys will attak,on the other hand its a bit like being attaked by dead sheep,
and can be quiet funny, but not worth the cash!!!!!

Possibly the same reason none of the 'coming soon' games have that link? Might be worth looking again when the game is actually released on Steam.

It's a very good manual BTW, as is the norm for Matrix.

I own this game, and play it a LOT. One of the very finest turn-based strategy games ever made. How's that for an endorsement? The AI will KICK YOUR ASS, and do it with intelligent play, and with no artificial or gamey game play aids. The developer did and exceptional job with this game.

This is the only game I have ever seen that uses headquarters units, and units that trace their combat power and movement back to their supporting HQ units, via a logistic and supply line.

Each hex costs supply points. Roads are one point, mountains are 25. A mountain with a road is one point. Rivers are 50 points, rivers with bridges are a single point. You get the ... point. Heh.

If you go off road, through the woods or hills, you won't get far until you bog down. Unless you have an engineer battalion creating the necessary road structure to support your assault!

You can develop scenarios with the road grid maxed out, similar to the eastern US, or you can start the scenario with very few roads. Your call.

You can also start with big cities, whose factories produce a crap lot of units, or smallish cites, with a slower growth. You can have light forces hit and run, or end up with a MAMMOTH front line, similar to World War I.

It is a tremendous amount of fun to build an airfield, support and defend it, and use the bombers you build to interdict enemy supply lines, perhaps blowing up a bridge, or tearing up roads. All of a sudden, enemy forces that were well in supply now are not..and defend and attack at half strength, or less. Surround them with your light tanks ( you DID produce light tanks, didn't you??), and their defense is less still.

Tactics work well. Pincer, isolate, attack, at a tactical level, coupled with a strategic design.

Game maps are huge..100 by 200 hexes, which is ... doing the math... 20,000 individual hexes.

You can have 1 or up to 10 cities per each faction, up to ten factions. This is from ten to 100 cities, from villages to very large cities. One hundred large cities, with the massive production each is capable of, would take months to play.

You can start with no research, or a fair amount. You can use your production towards research, or unit purchase, or a combination. Some of your production MUST be used to maintain supply. Each city is linked to a specific headquarters unit..which can be changed as you capture new cities. Generally, the farther back they are, the more they are re-purposed for research...supply lines just get too long.

GREAT game..do not hesitate..just buy it.

Surf over to: http://www.vrdesigns.nl/?p=270 to download the free Strategy Guide. It will actually give you a better idea of gameplay than the manual which focusses more on details than the big picture.

Best wishes,
Vic

Strange - it works for me. Where exactly are you trying to access it from? Maybe its related to the page you view it on.

Maybe it's related with Steam as I was able just now to download the manual from the game store.

Check this URL:

I never really read any of the in-depth guides on supplies and other stuff and never really bothered with how the numbers work. The best thing to do to at least start to know what is going on is to watch Das123 (or was it Das24680?)'s lets play of this game on youtube. Knowing the basics like how to move a unit, transfer subformations, build roads/forts/etc, HQs, and even things like attacking and bombarding is really vital to at least start enjoying the game.

The game is pretty straightforward unless you really want to delve in the inner workings of the numbers but I think something like common sense (in a way that you know it is not good to attack a well entrenched unit or anti-tank kills tanks) could help a lot. In games like this, you really have to remove that mindset you have from other strategy games like assuming 1 tank is enough to roflstomp infantries.

I would also advise any beginners to go to the matrix forums as there are a few people who are really helpful there and even the dev answers questions there from time to time. If you need help, go and look for Webizen over the matrix forums as he pretty much helped me with most stuff from this game plus the other people in the forum.

I'd also recommend reading this:

More so than a lot of turned based war games, ATG comes closer to putting players in the Commander's boots. Not only that, you have to manage the your nation's war economy.

While there is a bit of a learning curve the game is well worth the effort. The random game creation engine is the best I've seen and is the number one reason why I never tire of playing this game.

Blackwatch created a post asking for a manual. We posted the links to the manual and pinned the topic to make it easier for others to find the manual. This was a useful thread for the community.

However Blackwatch then edited the post to change fromasking about a manual to an attack on the game - you can see the top of the thread, but I have copied his comments here to prevent them being edited again.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but this was a very underhand attempt to damage the game and its reputation and is completely unacceptable. I am very surprised and disappointed by the behaviour and Blackwatch has been banned.

I am locking also locking this thread and request that everyone just ignores this and moves on. I am sure some of you will be very angry with what Blackwatch has done but I would ask that the best solution is to let the topic die.
