Split/Second

Split/Second

Multiplayer offline
Did they reactivate the multiplayer servers which they shut down about 2-3 years ago?
If not, why do they release this game now on Steam and for this prize?!

Official Online servers are dead, because, well, the devs have shut down in 2011. So sad.
You can play through LAN though, which requires a third-party program like Hamachi or Tunngle. You should find players pretty much every time.

It lists multiplayer on the store page but the disc and other digitally bought versions still do not work online so hopefully someone who bought the game on Steam can post back here and let us know if it works or not.
if it doesnt work then steam needs to remove the multiplayer tag from the store

Is it possible that the multiplayer tag could refer to offline, local multiplayer? Like, split screen or LAN play?

idunno but thats still a bit misleading when buying something. it would be much beter to say "Local Multiplayer" or "Online Multiplayer"

i suppose they will add steamworks to multiplayer... 20 euros woth it.

the last sentence in the game description even says
"Intense Multiplayer – Compete in a variety of game modes in 2-player split screen or take the action online in races for up to 8 players."

Well, that is certainly misleading then. Unfortunately when buying older games like this though it is always worth doing a quick bit of research. Game servers shutting down is quite commonplace nowadays.

It would be nice if Steam would pay a little closer attention and not let wording like that through.
im hoping they address it and change it at some point. I wont be buying till then even if its just single player. the game isa lot of fun even without mp. but right now at the price they have it at for an older game and no multiplayer support....its kind of greedy to say the least. same goes for PURE, an amazing game but questionable MP support same as this game and the price too.

I agree, I wish the pricetag was lower.

But definitely be aware, multiplayer in this game should still work with an easy workaround just as "A Tomato" said earlier. Hamachi will connect computers together so they appear on the same network and you can play a local LAN game over the internet. It is an extra step though so it would be nice to not have that hassle.

I just purchased this game and I am downloading it now, I will respond later letting you know if the built in online multiplayer is indeed inactive.

No multiplayer, no buy.

I assumed as much and really didn't have any hope that it would be re-activated now but I figured it'd be a definitive answer for PirateorNinja.

Only to add on to this to provide more options.

You can use a service called Evolve. It is a chat client that also can be used to play lan games over the internet. It is also much more plug 'n play feeling in my opinion, than Hamachi or Tunngle. As you just open a chatroom, set a name and/or game, set to public and people can find you via the matchmaking system. Plus you can voice chat in the chatroom (given everyone has a mic). Not sure if they support the Steam version of this game without editing something. However, if they do youcan use it as an in-game overlay as well as the whole tunneling process.

I believe there is also a application called Gamescomm or GameRecon. (Not 100% sure on the name) that tunnels games as well.

In case it helps, I bought this on PS3 recently and the multiplayer is indeed up and running there.
