Check out Global Conflict Blue 2. It's free, but it's also in Beta, so might not be complete, but it is a lot more recent.

I agree with you but its too cartooney for me to really get into it. what i really love about fleet command is that it really FEELS like something huge and serious. NWAC just seems like a game in comparison

Check out Command: Modern Air / Naval Operations (CMANO). Its on Steam. A little bit too expensive though but worths till the last penny.

I tried this out. too complicated for me. No tutorials.

its meant more as a engine for naval game creation. theres several games on steam right now that use this.

That game is the only DLC indeed. No others at the moment. But thats a perfect entry to the main game. With Northern Inferno you can only play a 15 scenario campaign and some tutorial missions. You miss many community created missions (over 200 right now) and the scenario editor which is used to create your own scenarios. But you can buy the main game later if you like Northern Inferno. Northern Inferno alone includes many hours of gameplay indeed.

I bought COMMAND:MODERN NAVAL/AIR OPERATIONS (CMANO) from Matrix Games last week at a reduced sale price of £28 (about 45 US dollars) but don't like it much, it's far too complex and fiddly, but at least you can create your own very small scens in the editor which are easier to handle.
Sadly there are no 3D animations at all, just boring blips on a screen like the old Harpoon series.
Hey, DANGEROUS WATERS is a game worth checking out if it's still available, I had it a few years ago, it's a bit like Fleet Command but you can board ships to get first-person 3D views.
PS- speaking of Fleet Command, I've got it on disk but it won't run, maybe there's a compatibility probem with my Win 7.
Shall I buy the Steam version to see if I have better luck?

PS- COMMAND:NORTHERN INFERNO is an offshoot of CMANO in the same style as CMANO.

This link is bogus. It doesn't direct you to the game, just the host website. I tried searching for GCB2 but, it just sent me to another page full of links that were pretty much "click here, you might get lucky".
