This remake is garbage.

What they've added:
improved graphics
internet highscore for each map
steam achievments
crash bugs

What they've cut:
campaign + cutscences (now you directly select any of the missions)
skirmish
multiplayer
saving (ok - it just doesn't work right now)

But what is by far the worst:
The controls - No hotkeys, lots of units you have to build individually each (no autobuild like in Z1), bolzy camera control.
You idealy need the apm of an korean Starcraft pro-gamer to beat later missions.

In the current state (04.08.2014) a waste of money - even for a Z-fanboy like me.

Steel soldiers was a really good game when it came out. THIS IS NOT THAT GAME!!!!!! I cannot stress enough how this is totally different from the from version of this game. Cutscenes are gone, visual controls are garbage, all robots, vehicles and buildings appear as being black so it is very hard to tell what is yours and what isn't. Pyros shoot nothing just a flamethrower sound and I can't speak for most of the other units in the game because your technicians won't capture the fort in the beginning of the first forest level and basically the game can't proceed. This game is major leage broken and an absolute crap remake of a really good original.

Wow! This is a great example of how to completely screw up a remake! It looks better sure but way too much has changed and as a result I feel like this is a downgrade in more ways than it should be. What happened man?

Really hoped that I'd like this, as I just barely remember playing it over 10 years ago. But nope.

Menus are clunky and slowed down by unnecessary animations.
Crashes frequently in loading screen, including when clicking on the "Continue" button after completing a mission.

Selecting the right units is difficult, occasionally it won't select them on the first click or click-and-drag, and giving orders is another mess as well, as you might easily click on the wrong thing. I failed one mission because I was trying to order an attack on a building behind the objective, but instead, I clicked on the objective's hitbox and my troops fired on it, destroying it when I was supposed to capture it.

Listen up Soldier!
If you want the real experience, track down a copy of this on CD, which is a DISK.
Then you're probably going to need a device to read that DISK, get one of those!
And THEN you'll need to by-pass some old TransGlobal security measures.

Once you've done that, grab an ice cold can of rocket fuel and strap yourself in for some fan spinnin' high processing, mother board melting mayhem!!

The remake? Just a sad abomination.. crying shame but it is what is soldier.

the remake ruined my childhood & it's unfair & insulting to long time fans. i have been playing this game since i was 3.

here's a list of all my problems with this game.

1. crashes after completing two missions in row.
2. crashes in mission 13 when flying over the prison by helicopter.
3. game's steam cover is not updated for the new library & has affected my library's look.
4. ui's muddy graphic is a turn off & makes the game look childish.
5. games soundtrack is not available.
6. no hotkeys, no key to select & separate a group of units.
7. unit movements are slow a bit.
8. unit selection is glitchy
9. water has no reflection.
10. no graphics settings.
11. no option to toggle between the original & the remastered graphics.
12. ww2 design change is a major put off for long time fans.
13. low to no texture bump maps.
14. no multiplayer.
15. game hasn't been updated since 2015.


Edit 1:
1. game crashes few minutes after 5 or more choppers move simultaneously
2. construction workers often don't stand in front of the building they're constructing

Remastered old RTS from the 90s. Needs alot of work right now, many issues, crashes and bugs - my worst issue with the game is the awfully, no painfully slow map scrolling speed. Developers, give us options to change the scrolling speed - for skirmish missions, its a real pain to move around the map at a god awful speed especially when alot of action is taking place and you need to quickly navigate around the map without constantly clicking the mini-map.

Also, in Skirmish Mode - the AI on lower difficulty settings needs nerfing. I didn't see any difference in difficulty from Easy AI to Hard AI. Other RTS games which have AI settings have noticible changes in difficulty, currently the player is at a serious dis-advantage in Skirmish when the AI can easily capture multiple zones, attack and defend all at the same time when the player can only do one of these at once.

Promising, but needs some re-balancing and a few patches.

I have a windows xp running with the cd version of the original game going level by level with this "remaster" and this remaster is good for ONE thing, If you can't get the original to work. The original was a pain in the EVERYTHING to get it to work right, even on windows xp ( its supported OS ) that said I managed to get a patch for it and the original works fine ( mostly ) now.

The original is superior in almost every way, even graphics of the original have more charm than the remaster to be honest. Seeing as how the remaster is abound with bugs, one or two that even prevent campaign progress and skrimishes are hard to progress through because of random CTDs.

Should you buy this? Can you get the original to work? if so then DO NOT buy this. If you can't get the original to work, then hope they patch the bugs in this ( and as me writing this years after release i doubt that ) and get this instead, the comic book art is where the story is told and its hilarious.

Z Steel Soldiers is a remake of the 2001 RTS game in attempts to bring it into a playable state on modern systems. Their utter failure of making this game relevant is sadly apparent even in the options menu or lack of display options available.

The controls are not re-bindable and for a RTS that is a big over sight. The control issues in the game do not help this matter any. In between a resources system that forces your play mode into high rush style combat along with buildings and summoning of troops which take you out of the fight due to the poorly laid out UI these two things fight against each others very nature. The game is filled with controls which make the game more of a chore to play than a challenge. Along with a mini map that is next to worthless.

It has no skirmish mode nor any way outside the campaign missions to play the game. Their addition of a leader board system does not help the game out for it adds nothing to the actual play ability of the game. The game is more of a hassle than a worth.

Don't waste your money.
The company ruined a classic game. It is still buggy and nothing has been done since about 2015 or 2017, over 3 years ago.
You can't tone down the AI like you could in the old version, making the last two battles impossible to win.
The original version was wonderful to play with many features and ways to use and control the various elements.
The new version's graphics was prepared for a fancier monitor with a more 3D type of feel. This wasn't really all that necessary. The use of a darkened background to limit your view of the enemy is rather irritating. In the old version you could look and get a feel of the terrain but not see the enemy unless they were within sight. With the new version, you can't get a feel for anything. At least in the military and the old version, you can look across the valley and see the terrain.
In the old version, you could control the level of difficulty to a certain extent. In the new version, you can't and it is set at max difficulty.
I still have the original dvd and manual and there are features in the old system that allowed you to control the elements that you can no longer do despite what is said in the website of the new system.
I would rather play the old version if I can get it to work on Windows10.
