Freespace 2

FSO step by step install instructions?
Alright, I'm not technology illiterate. But not exactly up to speed on this FSO install. Can I please get a step by step on how to install FSO. I installed it once and I don't believe I did it right. Any help is appreciated.

There should be something called launcher.exe in your Freespace folder, this allows you to select the FSO exe that you want (fs2_open_3_7_2_RC3.exe), set various settings, including your in-mission resolution, and select any mod you've got in your Freespace folder.

Then, all you have to do is hit "run" and you are good to go.

Steam version works fine. You just need to register it with windows. As follows:

In order for the game to run on your computer, do the following.

A) Go to the directory that the game was installed in
B) Go to the 'data' folder
C) DOUBLE click on the file 'FS2.reg'
D) Click 'Yes' When asked if you want 'Registry Editor' to make a system change
E) Click 'Yes' When Registry Editor asks if you are sure you want that change
F) Click 'OK' when Reg Edit says it's done
G) Run the game and enjoy

Leaving aside why you bothered bumping every single support thread with this list of seven steps for what is really just doing one thing (along with insulting people for not mentioning it even though threads were from before FS2.reg even existed), I'm not sure why you felt this was relevant to a thread specifically about FSO, not making the regular Steam install work.

Relevant when the FSO ALSO failed to get past the directory bug until the REG file was installed for me, and quite a few others.

If you got a "Freespace2/Fred2 cannot be run from a drive root directory!" error, you weren't running FSO.

Dude, I've done gaming longer than you know. File date/time were of the FSO. Windows 7 wasn't passing the information it wanted till the registry file was loaded. After that, it worked a charm.

Hey, "dude", back before FS2.reg even existed, people having the "Freespace2/Fred2 cannot be run from a drive root directory!" error were running FSO. If FSO had exactly the same problem, they would not have been able to.

You set resolution through the launcher. Keep in mind that the menus will be limited to 1024x768, so make sure to actually fly a mission to verify that your resolution settings are working.

Hi guys.
I'm having trouble actually running the FSO installer. There is simply nothing to run. No executable, bat, com file. Just the package in JAR, then I unpack as winrar takes charge in these things, but there is nothing to run. Seems really basic I know but I'm clueless. Trying to download different versions and stuff but nada.

This is what I'm tryingto conjure up: http://www.fsoinstaller.com/

Back in 2010 I already installed it, worked like a charm, but I don't remember which version, and definitely don't remember how. All I can recall is that it seemed really complicated, but at the end I only needed to run something I installed and from a launcher platform I could chose any mod I wanted to download. It took awhile but everything was working without problem. I remember playing the FS 1 campaign, but maybe from FS 2 as a mod.
Thanks for the help in advance.

The .jar file is actually a runnable java archive, not something you actually have to unpack. In order to run it, you need to install Java[java.com] first, then Windows should automatically use java to run the .jar.
