What's the difference between being artistic and being pretentious?
People who play Tale of Tales games typically fall into one of two categories: 1) people who think they are a bunch of pointless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and a waste of money or 2) people who think they are intellectuall challenging and force us to reevaluate our concept of a game.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. You should never play a Tale of Tales game expecting an actual video game. If you do, you will feel frustrated, confused, and possibly a little violated. These aren't games in the traditional sense. Instead, they are supposed to be moments, like a painting brought to life. It isn't about a challenge, a plot, or characters. It is about you as a person, more so than even just as a player, setting aside your regular life to take a minute and breath in the air of a different world.

That being said, to quote the collective masses, what is the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ point? Yes, the game might be "artsy," but is being artsy in and of itself a worthy cause?

To the people who hate these games: Would you like them better if they were not categorized as games, but as interactive art pieces? Do you think you could benefit from a "game" that was trying to communicate with you emotionally, rather than entertain you?

To the people who like these games: Do you like them because they geniunely speak to you emotionally, or because they are, in their own way, gimmicky? Could they be more effective in delivering their purpose?

I like them because they looks good, really, really good to me. I got a lot of games by visual reason only and all Tale of Tales games too (except Graveyard), and also they are really NOT games, and that is so unnatural, unright, that is why I like to play them - because I am mad :happymeat: They are hypnotizing to me. I feel very calm while playing, because the end of the ToT games are always defined, - you will defenetly be killed (The Path) or you will never be killed (all others) so now walk, watch, read, enjoy. You should not hide or fight. I play videogames for 20 years already, and I'm fed up with run-and-hide-and-kill things. :Northmen:

Excellent points! Yes, Tale of Tales games are refreshing. I think there is a lot to be said for novelty. New experiences are always fun. At the same time, we usually aren't as critical with novel experiences as we are with things we experience often. For example, if you only saw one movie in your life, chances are you would like it. However, once you see more movies, then you have other things to compare them to, so you raise your standards. I think this is the case with Tale of Tales games. They give you something you have never seen before, so you have nothing to compare it to. However, I wonder how good their games would seem if more game companies were interested in making quite art pieces.

:happymeat: Hope to see that! Indie gamescene becomes more and more promising in this way each year, so I think it's just a matter of one-three years for such genre to appear. )

Good question, I always think they put themselves in a wrong place, waste time here get more negative comments, trying to define a new possibility of video games

But you didn't answer your topic question,
They're never pretentious because they know what they are doing, they're true and their works explicable, no one "trying to seem more intellectuall "than they really are.

Can't say absolutely so, it's hard to find a person to play Bientôt l'été just somewhere in the Internet, for example... Also i like what is happening with The Sunset - Tale of Tales are making some nice discussions here, on Steam, to collect opinions from people right before the making of the game. If it was a discussion somewhere on the official cite, there will be some different people there, less feedback, maybe. Also it's just more comfortable to have all games collected on one site with multiple pay options, to buy them altogether, and to operate with downloading and playing then with use of one simple service :happymeat:

I mean that I think it's just a problem about promotion, to show their works to the right target audience, not gamers.
To be honest, I don't like they are changing, I feel sad about it. Have you seen the video they gave the lecture in Aalto University?
