Building underground

Has anyone else had trouble? Almost every time I want to, say, dip a coaster or a mine train underground, it takes a crapton of surrounding land with it, and the height values are also seemingly random. I remember in RCT2 it was 2 height levels for some things, 4 for others, but it was standard.

Any thoughts?

its a bit tricky at first. try to build an underground entrance, and lower the land before you have the rollercoaster enter it - it can look a lot cleaner, and the entrance usually gives it a finished look rather than a bunch of chopped up ground.

or, just build it into a wall and try to use the terrain flattening tool that removes all sharp edges. that can be a decent start.
