Get better PC.
4 hours later, beat the entire game. No technical issues whatsoever.
I had no video (only sound) during the intro video, followed by the game crashing (Windows 7 64-bit, multi-monitor AMD+ATI setup), which was fixed by disabling desktop composition on TheMaw.exe, as follows.
1. Right click on the game in your Steam library, and select Properties at the bottom of the context menu.
2. On the Local Files tab, select Browse Local Files (game folder opens in Windows Explorer, or if it doesn't you should know what to do instead).
3. Right click on TheMaw Application (TheMaw.exe if you've fixed Windows' silly default extension hiding), and again select Properties from the context menu).
4. On the Compatibility tab, check the "Disable desktop composition" box, and select OK.
5. Close the Explorer Properties and Steam Properties (if you're done fiddling) and re-start the game.
This workaround often works for me for "older" games which exhibit missing intro video (and in fact many other problems) on Windows 7, whereas many others suggest more drastic solutions such as running with Windows XP compatibility (resulting in an annoying prompt) or running as Administrator (not needed even for old "broken" games if you install outside of Windows' protected directories, even though doing so without setting those directories protected [if that's even possible] is a security issue in itself).
Have fun.
