Majesty Multiplayer Question

I just have a quick question reguarding multiplayer for this game. Me and my friend wish to play together, but my original disks suffered some damage throughout the years that are causing a few bugs and whatnot. Now, my friend just has the gold cd edition of majesty. So my question is will we be able to play together if I get the Gold HD edition from steam? Thank you for your replies.

Online you and your firend won't be able to play at all unless you set up a lan service such as Hamachi. Alas, it only ever seems to work over Lan-played games.

Then again, I've only done it once, and I'm not sure I could recreate what my friend and I had to do to make it work. He was using a disc, and I was using the steam version, so maybe that might cause problems if they're both steam? Its a fun game, and we'd still be playing had we not both discovered Crusader Kings 2 at the same time.

How reliable is Hamachi? My antivirus labels it as a threat. Is there another alternative?
