Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic

Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic

The obligatory..."Oh man, I feel old." thread.
This was an amazing game back in the day...but has it aged well in the last 25 years?

I think they must have something to it. It's 254 mb. I think the copy I played when it came out was on 2 double sided 5 1/4's :)
Well, there is narration to all the paragraphs. Don't worry about the look of the game. Anyone asks, tell them it's "retro".

I didn't play the game when it first came out (it's actually older than I am), but I played it for the first time a year before Wasteland 2 was kickstarted and I was quite surprised that it has aged fairly well when compared to other, even younger DOS games. The main reasons for this I think are that the game is designed fairly well, the progression of items, skills and storyline are intertwined skillfully, combat is nice to look at but can be sped up for fights that feel unnecessary, using macros eliminates a lot of tediousnes even modern RPG games can't seem to shed, the interface isn't too clunky and the usage based skill progression feels very modern.

Games that aged badly usually use a forerunner of a control interface that would later be improved. But you can't really improve an interface for a game that uses a two-axis grid based movement system and if you use the macros intelligently party management becomes even easier than in other modern RPGs.
It got tweaked LONG ago. The original release allowed skills to raise on their own through use (enter combat, beat somebody with a crowbar, and your BRAWLING skill might go up a level without spending POINTS. Use a knife and your KNIFE FIGHTING skill might go up. Use PICKLOCK to open a door and your PICKLOCK skill might go up, etc.). I guess someone decided that the skills were going up too far, too fast so they got into the game and tweaked it so that it is now just about impossible to enjoy the game. I downloaded the game 36 hours ago, I have started 4 separate parties, all of them with level 1 skills, and they all got wiped within hours. And I never even finished the Ag Center. this never happened on the original version. It would be nice if they would make it easier for skills to level. They might bring back some of the joy the original game brought us.
