Do lady player-characters still have to be an elf?

I'm not fond of elves and I never understood why the male PC was a human and the female PC was an elf. Has this been relooked since the game's release or is that still the case?

Yes still as it is. Not being a 3d game is hard to do full customization of the PC, for example in each of the love scenes we'd have to do different variants based on race, a lot of extra work.
Unless we go with "seen from first person" and the PC is never shown on screen.

I understand the technical limitations involved, I just can't fathom why race is functionally tied to the character's sex. I'm not going to grand-stand and say "this has cost you a sale" or some juvinille nonsense, but I will say that it's a design decision that immediately put me off from the game when it first came out and my disposition has remained the same..
