MoonBase Commander

Click here to learn how to play this over the internet (not just LAN)
Moonbase Commander DOES support internet play, but in the original release it used GameSpy which is no longer around, so the method to do it is a little obscure but still works.

Here's instructions for manually setting up a game over the internet (skip down below for an even easier method):

Host player:

  • Figure out what your external IP address is ( http://www.whatismyip.com/ ). Give that address to anyone you want to join you.

  • If you have a router, either set up your computer as the DMZ host for your router, or use port forwarding to make sure ports 2300 and 47624 (TCP) and 2350 (UDP) are forwarded to your computer. I'm not going to go into details here, but google around on port forwarding and hosting internet games if you don't know what I'm talking about. You may also have to open those ports on any Firewalls you have in order to host.

  • Right-click on Moonbase Commander in your Steam Library, then click Properties.

  • Click on the Local Files tab.

  • Click the Browse Local Files... button.

  • Open the Moonbase.ini file in Notepad (have to have played the game at least once first!).

  • Right under [system] add a new line to the file and type in: HostIP=1

  • Save the file and exit Notepad.

  • Run the game and wait for others to join you!

Joining player(s):

  • Get the public IP address of the host player from them.

  • Right-click on Moonbase Commander in your Steam Library, then click Properties.

  • Click on the Local Files tab.

  • Click the Browse Local Files... button.

  • Open the Moonbase.ini file in Notepad (have to have played the game at least once first!).

  • Right under [system] add a new line to the file and type in: JoinIP=<the host's IP address> (without the <>). For example if the host's address is 100.101.123.154 you'd use JoinIP=100.101.123.154

  • Save the file and exit Notepad.

  • Run the game and it should automatically try to connect to the host you specified!

After playing:

  • Edit the Moonbase.ini file and remove the HostIP= or JoinIP= line before running the game in order to play single-player again!

EASIER METHOD:

  • Get MoonbaseIP from http://www.zauron.net/utilities.php (or directly from http://www.zauron.net/downloads/MoonbaseIP.zip )

  • Unzip it directly in the Moonbase Commander folder itself (see instructions above for how to find the Moonbase Commander folder).

  • Run MoonbaseIP (may need to run as an administrator) and follow instructions (you'll still need to open the right ports on your router/firewall to host though, see above). Note that if you are using a router, the IP address it returns when you check your IP to host is probably wrong, use http://www.whatismyip.com/ instead.

Hopefully eventually Moonbase Console will also work with this version when they are done getting the GoG version to work (see http://www.gog.com/forum/moonbase_commander/moonbase_console/ ) which has additional features like randomly generated maps!

If anyone wants to turn this post into a Guide, feel free with my blessing! Also speaking of guides, check out my guide to the game here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/555470-moonbase-commander/faqs/17448

Me and some friends have discovered that Hamachi can be used in conjunction with your wonderful MoonbaseIP tool to play online WITHOUT any port forwarding. As long as your firewall is set up to allow it, it works like a charm!

After all players are connected via Hamachi, (which is still free for up to 5-person networks, btw), the hosting player just hosts as normal without any tools, and the connecting players use MBIP, (pointed at the hamachi address of the host), to join.

Hope this helps!

Also if you are having troubles, try turning off UPnP (universal plug-n-play) on your Router - I had to do that to get it to work for myself. Seems it has something to do with the way DirectPlay works. And, if you are on a newer version of Windows (8 or later), you may need to turn on DirectPlay. You can find the setting under the "Programs and Features" control panel, then "Turn windows features on or off" and finally its under Legacy components.

Or, give up on this game, don't give them a penny more because of false advertising, and buy Seigecraft Commander.

Checking in here for 2022, this still works for Windows 10 and 11.
