i have FC boyeeeee
FC is the setup. Think of it like boxing a gift, and the gift is the story. SC is the fight to put the wrapping paper on the gift, and putting a nice neat little bow on it. Then 3rd is the jackass friend who points out all the problems you made in wrapping said gift, or that your bow is tied wrong, or that you can see parts of the gift in gaps from your wrapping job.
FC/SC wrap up the story very well, but there are a bunch of little plot holes here and there throughout SC. You may be so focused on the main story as introduced in FC, that you won't notice them. Not without looking deeper for them, anyway.
3rd basically takes all of those plot hooks that were left behind in SC and shines a giant effin' spotlight on them and turns your attention to A LOT of problems going down in Zemuria outside of Estelle and Joshua's scope of vision.
And it resolves none of them.
(Conversely, 3rd is one of my favorites of the entire series at the same time, only challenged by Ao no Kiseki.)
Japanese version most likely
I can read Japanese, yes.
The majority of Estelle and Joshua's story is supposed to conclude with SC. They will continue to be characters in the Third, but just side characters, not main characters.
And more specifically, omgfloofy runs one of the most important Falcom fansites on the web: http://www.esterior.net/
They've got an IRC channel where you can hang out and chat with a number of people who have played these games in Japanese. It's #falcom on irc.rizon.net .
From what I've heard, the Third serves as a transition to the other games in the Trails subseries.
The 3rd is basically the setup for plot threads in future games. There is the main story, and it DOES resolve itself, but in resolving itself, it ALSO adds in more questions.
We'll you have me intriged. I'll have to buy it if it were to come out on steam.
