Solution to black screen on Linux
Run the game with the following commands:
vblank_mode=0 MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=4.0 MESA_GLSL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=400

You can do this via Steam's "set launch options" or via terminal, either is fine. I hope it works for you as it works for me.

The particular bug being discussed here is not yet fixed. I still have to manually define:

MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=4.0 MESA_GLSL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=400 %command%

What has been fixed are some crashes I got when the system notification or something else appeared. I could not even change the sound because it would trigger a system notification and crashed the computer hehe. /That/ is fixed, yes.

Hello rpmcruz.
So actually it is working perfectly fine for you as long as you are using this command line and since you have updated your ubuntu to the latest release version?
Additionally are all your drivers up to date?
Just let Ubuntu install the drivers (automatically), which are recommended in 'Additional Drivers'.
Also have you tried verifying the game's cache and/or reinstalling it in the first place?

The crash I was experienced is fixed. The bug being discussed here is NOT fixed. The screen is black unless I edit the game launch options.

My graphics driver is Intel. There are no "additional" property drivers for Intel because Intel already integrates all their drivers with Linux. Only nvidia and ATI have property drivers that must be installed through the "additional" drivers tool.

I don't know whether the other guys are using Intel. That would help narrow down the bug.

By the way, my Intel is an Ivybridge Mobile.

Hi rpmcruz
Probably the easiest thing might be, that your integrated graphic chip is not the best option for playing Tropico at all.
Nevertheless please provide your full system specs, as it more sounds like a problem with the hardware barely hitting the minimum requirements and therefore causing problems.
CPU, GPU and RAM would be important to know.

Here is the result of:

LANG=C sudo lshw

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mj01riboyd3d1dk/pombo.txt?dl=0

Should cover everything hehe :)

Guys, share also your hardware specs to see if we can make sense of this...

Hello rpmcruz.
I am not quite sure why this topic keeps being bumped from your end.
There is no bug at all and this commandline fixes your crashes, as you have stated.
Which Linux are you using?
Nevertheless your system is barely hitting the minimum required system specs and therefore probelms, especially crashes might happen, when there is simply not enough resources available to properly play the game.

important to add %command% (unlike the first post which is missing it!) its just setting environment variables see http://www.mesa3d.org/envvars.html

"I am not quite sure why this topic keeps being bumped from your end."

You requested I posted my hardware specs, so I did.

A year later and I am STILL having this same problem. Tropico 5 used to work on an older version, but after an update, it started going to a blank screen on launch.

I have tried every suggestions on this thread and nothing has worked. No, I do not have an Intel Graphics card, I have a Nvidia GTS 450 with version 367 of the drivers.

Hi darth_borehd.
Please share your whole DxDiag, or at least some more details about your system (OS+bit, CPU, GPU and RAM) that we can get this sorted properly.
-cheers
darth_borehd Nov 24, 2016 @ 12:39am
Operating system: Linux Mint 17.3 64-bit
RAM: 16 GB
CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz × 8
GPU: Nvidia GTS 450 1 GB RAM

I have another computer with the same specs and Tropico 5 will not run on either of them.
All other Steam games work fine.

Hi darth_borehd.
Please be aware that we are only supporting Ubuntu Linux (latest) and no other versions, even though those might be based on Ubuntu.
So the only thing I can recommend is, using Ubuntu or heading to the linux-/Mint forums as there might be a problem with your distro.

Can you give me a list of possible launch parameters so I can try them myself?

The problem seems to be that the game starts in a refresh rate or resolution that all the monitors I have tried can't use.
